I began using the Skill System with a select group from our program of Developmentally Delayed guys who have sexual problem behaviors and emotional control problems. Though sometimes we stay on a lesson for more than one week, this is the best set of curriculum and handout materials I'm come across for emotional regulation in 21 years of working with this population. We provide residential and work placement services as well so now we're ordering a couple dozen new Instructors Books for lead staff to train them and then they will introduce it throughout the program. I found great joy after training the clients in the skills for 6 months, the hearing the staff come and ask for the same training because it cause such concrete improvement for the clients.

Julie Brown is one of the leading clinicians and researchers in the field of treating behaviorally challenging individuals who are coping with the additional stress of developmental disabilities. She works every day with clients in group and individual sessions, while finding time to develop, implement, and evaluate treatment strategies that can be replicated in multiple settings. The Instructor's Guide is a hands-on manual for clinicians, and is useful as a self-help tool for families and individuals. The work is adapted from Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and is approved by her group. Full disclosure: I worked with Julie for several years as a co-leader, and I am now the CEO of the agency where she works [...] Her work is endorsed by many others, though--and the fact that I know the author means that I can write with absolute confidence in her seriousness of purpose, her commitment, and her compassion towards the individuals with whom she works.

This guide book is one of a kind. The tailoring of the material to suite the population underserved who have developmental diabilities is much needed. The author was able to offer a useful tool to care givers.
