Skorpio is clearly lacking the fantastic, wicked humor Mr. Baron filled the pages of the Badger with, instead opting to go for the seedy underbelly of drama, giving us a very Quentin Tarantino-esque world of crime and tragedy. His writing pulls you in, painting such a vivid picture that I found myself wanting to watch some desert movies for comparison.
My only gripes with Skorpio are minor--the writing style is not what I personally am used to, but by book's end was totally comfortable with. Secondly, Skorpio is a little too seedy and dark. It's a great story, but when I think ghosts and treasure in the desert, I think pulp. I wanted something quite a bit more lighthearted and adventurey.
This is a great read though, and shows that Mike Baron will make a big mark in novels just as he did in comics. I eagerly await the sequel.
The book mostly follows a Professor whose idealistic life begins to unravel after he allows a student to touch one of the exhibits he is in charge of . It leads to the introduction of some colorful characters and a hunt for buried treasure. The characters are not entirely likable but that's part of Mike Baron's talent .
He still makes you turn the page to see what happens next . I'm looking forward to his next books .
So yes, I dig him. You will too.
