Top customer reviews
The bass is loud. Very loud. Loud to the point that if you turn it all the way up and play a song that has the right frequency the vibrations will hurt your ears. 5 Stars for Skullcandy making a product that lets the user decide if they want to crank it up to a risky level.
The mids and highs can keep up with the bass. 5 stars for Skullcandy making a high quality overall set of headphones - not just headphones with a lot of bass.
If you turn the bass all the way down on these they are still a solid pair of headphones for the money.
I read reviews from people complaining about three things - the headphones not being loud enough, certain songs not having enough bass and the headphones not being "audiophile" quality. I will explain these problems below as they are all USER error and lack of knowledge problems:
If the headphones are not loud enough switch out the factory 1/8" cable for one that is a larger gauge. Larger cable = more current = louder sound overall. But that usually isn't the problem - all you have to do is adjust the output of the amp on your listening device. Don't have an amp on your device? Change your iPhone from the "Pop" sound setting to "Rock". Hear the difference? That is your "amp". Sounds simple but a lot of people think having the volume all the way up means you are maxing out the sound settings on your device - volume and the performance/power of the amp are different. Still not loud enough? Then I have no idea what is wrong with you and/or your device because on my MacBook Pro and iPhone I can make these headphones seriously hurt my ears with bass and clear, loud music.
Next complaint can't be fixed - bass output depends on the size of the woofer versus the size of the enclosure to produce a frequency that is audible to the human ear. That is why songs have more or less bass on your home stereo or phone compared to a concert where it sounded perfect. It sounded perfect because the concert speakers had 5-10 different sized woofers in their speakers stacks, along with an equalizer with 20+ channels to maximize every range of bass. Can't do that with headphones that have very limited space inside of them.
Sidenote - also very hard to do with a home stereo unless you have $50,000+ to spend. No I am not joking about that price. And you can easily spend $100,000+ if you are that particular.
Last complaint - people complained that they are "audiophiles" and these headphones did not meet their expectations. Someone who is a true audiophile would never look at a Skullcandy product or any product in this price range and claim they were an audiophile. They will be the people with the $100,000+ home audio system and will not even look at headphones under $1,000 a pair. Even if you spend that much, hearing is your personal preference. What you might think sounds perfect might sound terrible to others and vice versa. I am 32 years old and I have been a DJ since I was 13. That doesn't make me an "audiophile"...
I like these headphones. That is my opinion and nothing more. If you want a pair of headphones to rattle your brain then get the Crushers.
Long story short, the headphones were too big for me and not my style/comfort (on-ear is better) and the extreme bass feature is not for me, I like more balance and maybe more subtle bass, not bass that overpowers the other sounds in my music.
I received these headphones in great looking condition, everything looks good. I set them up and then all I hear is static. Wtf!?! So I think maybe its the way I have the AUX cord plugged in, so I switch the way I have it plugged in so my mic is close to my phone instead of being near my mouth. Whatever not a big deal. But then I notice the sound is distance but the bass is fire. In order to get good sound quality I had to fix the sound on my phone (by adapting the sound in the settings) and it sounds AMAZING its like two different headphones because I can actually hear without having to turn it up all the way. The headphones are comfortable the sound quality after fixing my phone I like. But if you have no idea how to fix the sound I wouldn't buy these headphones. The sound is distance and sounds like someone is whispering to you.
At the beginning I was a bit disappointed that a bass powerful headphones will give me bass only on high volume. If you look online this is a wide spread complaint. I use my headphones while working on my computer. After much research and frustration I tried a couple things, and boom, all working perfect.
The main issue is that the bass electronics activate only when the low freq. are high enough. Once it is working the bass button on the side works perfect. In the computer, at least Windows, the un-equalized audio suck, so only on high volume the low freq will trigger the mechanism. Get yourself a nice Windows equalizer, change your low freq. settings and get ready to have your eardrums rocking. Since that change my headphones are working great.
Bass response is strong, and the audio quality real good.
Comfort, good noise reduction because of their size, and great bass kick, I like them and I'm very pleased.
