Top customer reviews
In the box are the earbuds, a removable flexible collar, a micro USB charging cable, and a second set of silicone tips. The earbuds are slightly angled in towards the ear, which gives them a snug, comfortable fit and makes them super easy to slip in and out. The flat cable is tangle-free, but kind of long, and after 6 months of sweating and throwing the buds in my bag, I’ve noticed some yellow discoloration on the cable. While there’s no advertised sweat or water proofing on these buds, the discoloration is not crazy noticeable, and overall, the buds feel very well built.
The sound quality on the Smokin' Buds is pretty good, but far from accurate. Like most other Skullcandy headphones, the bass is emphasized, with deep and punchy, distortion-free output at loud volumes. The mids are present, but kind of muddy. The high trebles can be problematic on certain trax, with hi hats, cymbals and snares sometimes sounding over-compressed to the point of crispy, bitcrush style distortion. While headphones like the Apple earpods have a warm overall sound, the Smokin' Buds are more on the metallic side. Overall, I’m typically partial to earbuds with an exaggerated, boomy sound, which these buds definitely deliver, especially on bass heavy rap and electronic music.
Pairing the Smokin' Buds to my iPhone via Bluetooth is easy and the connection is pretty stable within a 20 to 25 foot range. You hear a pleasant tri-tone beep when the buds are powered on and off, or connected and disconnected from your device. It almost always automatically re-connects to my phone when they’re powered on, though occasionally I’ve had to re-pair the device manually.
Battery life is advertised at a decent 6 hours on a single charge. I’ve been able to get about 4-5 hours of solid use in before an annoying low battery beep starts interrupting the music every few minutes when the buds reach about 30% remaining battery life. Luckily, charging is super quick via USB, and usually takes under an hour to get back to 100%.
The Smokin' Buds have decent-sounding bluetooth phone call capabilities using a built-in mic on the mic3 controls. These 3 buttons also allow you to answer or hang up phone calls, increase or decrease music volume, play/pause, and skip tracks by long pressing the plus and minus buttons. Skipping tracks is a bit annoying because you have to hold down on the plus and minus buttons for 5 seconds, which is way too long, in my opinion. # first world problems
My biggest complaint with these buds is the battery pack design. It’s lightweight, but it rests on the back of your neck and shifts easily from side to side during a workout, tugging on the buds in your ear. The included flexible collar keeps the battery and earbuds in place, but I really don’t like having a giant piece of plastic on my neck, especially when I’m sweating. There’s a tiny cable management attachment on the left side of the cable, which is helpful for keeping the buds around your neck without tugging, but the design is somewhat awkward.
Overall, I really enjoy the boomy sound quality and tough build of the Smokin' Buds. They’re super reliable and comfortable to wear, and they are one of the best contenders in the $50 and below wireless earbuds market today.
Well there's a couple negatives that drop the rating for me. I don't consider myself an audiophile but the sound seems very flat to me. It's somewhat disappointing because my other scullcandy headphones sound really good. The big issue for me is fit. Not how they fit in the ear but the stiff neck piece will not keep from falling off my neck when I do any kind of activity. I don't know what size neck they would wrap around enough to stay put but apparently it's a smaller size than mine. Maybe the active types of headphones hold better but it's not like I'm running with these on.if I lean back at all they fall off my neck. I'm going to try without the stiff neck piece at least that way they are light enough not to pull out of my ear while walking.
Don't get me wrong I don't regret buying them but they are just okay'...3 stars
They last long
Just charge it
Great for talking
Looks discreet, hide them in ur hoodie, blends in with ur hair.
Now... I need another pair... My 6 yr old took mine and seems to actually take care of them and loves them. They fit in her ear.
I love the fact u can take the plastic off and just use the wire without bulkiness. Then u can use the clasp to prevent them from falling off ur neck.
