James Garvin was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He has always been an avid reader and creator of strange stories since his youth. After moving to Texas, he got into playing AD&D and creating worlds and characters for his players to enjoy. His goal was to write fiction and make video games. The first story, Blood City Chronicles: The Black Petal, was well received by readers and is a good stepping stone into the character driven worlds he creates. A video game set in the Skullforge world is also in development.

Interesting Intro into a Different World

While the title was a little off-putting, I'm glad I went ahead and bought this anyway. The story is unfolded by a narrator type, think Lord of the Rings with Bilbo telling the story. You feel like the person is sitting across from you at the table telling you about the unfolding events. He pulls you in with tales of various kinds of strange folk. The descriptions are so well done you can see the people as they engage in whatever (a dance, dinner, etc.) they are doing. It's not all fun and games. Really, it's more like a prologue with just a taste of the problems yet to come for poor Desi. Actually, you'll find you don't really feel so much sorry for Desi as want to stand up and cheer for her tenacity. However, tenacity comes at a price sometimes and I fear Chapter two will let us know what that price might be. Well written, enjoyable, addictive. Pick up a pint and read.

This is the beginning chapter of a fantasy saga highlighting one family of elves: the Cornerstones. The patriarch of the Cornerstone family, Abraham, is saved from an accident and raised by human parents. However, he seeks out his true elf heritage, and he marries fellow elf, Jiana. She is a member of a warrior family.

The two of them have a daughter, Desinarious (Desi), who becomes a warrior in her own right. (She is the true focus of the series.) She is a strong-minded young lady who gets into trouble at court. You have to read the rest of the story to see exactly what happens!

I have to say that fantasy isn’t my absolute favorite genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed the professionalism and creativity of this book. The editing is top-notch, the plotline is complicated and intriguing, and the characters are three-dimensional and believable. I look forward to reading succeeding chapters!

I'm intrigued and ready for Chapter 2.

This opening chapter sets us up with a rich and clear image of the fantasy world we are visiting. We learn of generations past and are brought to the beginning of a journey with a fascinating heroine - uncompromising and not to be messed with. This has begun as a tale told in an easy, efficient manner, conversational enough to pull you in. Crisp descriptions and smart dialogue… I was ready to settle back and see what adventures await. Chapter 1 of Skullforge introduces us to the family background of Desinarious Cornerstone or Desi as she is known. The elven daughter of Abraham and Jinan Cornerstone, Desi, is a tomboy, a force to be reckoned especially when there is wrong being done. The story is riveting from the start. Desi is portrayed to be a strong woman, unique and gladiatorial and that too in a setting that is magical. I relaxed, turned the pages, and enjoyed the saga. Now I cannot wait for Chapter 2.
