The magic is fascinating, the setting vibrant, and the characters complex. As I read, I couldn't help but be reminded of the scene in 300 with the woman who was filmed dancing underwater to be the oracle. This story has nothing to do with that one, but it gave me the same sense of grace and wonder, mystery and horror.
I heartily recommend this story.
For a short story, this was a fast and fascinating read. The complexity and double meanings behind the use of language set the tone for this story. Readers could feel the heartache in Sky and the Lost Emperor as the story progressed, to the point where one part made me tear.
I'm glad she also used the "they" pronoun for Dew's gender to leave the reader guessing. It also shows part of the author's gender stance, which I appreciate.
Would definitely recommend as a up-coming author and look forward to any novels Holly writes in the future.
Is there potential for more? Of course! That's what a good short does to you, leaves you wanting more. So make it up yourself and then hope Holly writes more to see how your story compares with hers. Magical.
I actually gave this 2 1/2 stars but Amazon doesnt due halfs.
