About the Author

Ron Mackays interest in military aviation began during WWII. The local Coastal Command airfield at his birthplace of Wick, in northern Scotland, provided a wealth of British and American designs with which to stimulate his interest; postwar National Service with the RAF sustained that interest. A working knowledge of German has further extended his field of study into the Luftwaffe. To date, he has produced 25 books covering the aforementioned Allied and Axis Air Forces that include several co-authored projects; a further number are in the process of completion.

Sky scorpion is a good book on this unit; it covers the beginning of the unit and its deployment into the theater of Europe during WW2. Many maps and pictures are a plus to this book many war time mission are covered and the redeployment home and the units deactivation is covered. One interesting part of the book is the action against the Romanian oil fields this unit flew against during WW2. This book also covers the withdraw of the unit back to America and even when this is being accomplished casualties are still occurring. Great book

For anyone who has read this book does it contain any information about co-pilot Stephen Peter Judd "Pete"? He was killed in a crash while shutting off ignition in order to save the other 10 people who ended up surviving and becoming POW's. He's my great uncle and I'm trying to collect family history

This is a large book covering the first B-24 unit in the 8th AF. The book covers all of the support requirements behind the aircrews as well as the aircrews and missions.

My only complaint is the use of the word "infamous" to describe the heroic mission of August 1, 1943. The mission was FAMOUS the Nazi regime was "infamous" but this is a common misuse of words by authors who don't understand the true success of the mission. The 389th BG destroyed the capacity of the Nazis to produce high octane aviation fuel and this severely limited the ability of the Luftwaffe to intercept the high altitude bombers when the B-24s leveled the Nazi homeland.

Book was given to my 90 year old Uncle who served with the Sky Scorpions during WWII. He was a POW in Germany during the last 9 mo. of the war and was most happy to find his name listed in the book. He read it cover to cover in three days..... I learned of the book while visiting the 8th Air Force Museum in Savannah .
