The Sky Rover Phoenix is an entry level fixed pitch (FP) single rotor helicopter with a flybar for greater stability. It is about the same size as, but 2/3rds of the cost of, the WLToys V912, which I also have. This is a step up in difficulty from small coaxial heli's and is probably not a good first RC helicopter model. The model is ready to fly out of the box and I liked the feel of the basic 2.4GHz controller, which has digital trims on all 4 channels, but no other features.
The instructions for flying the helicopter combine pictorial and written directions for flying the helicopter and are similar to the layout in other SkyRover heli's; they could be clearer but are easy enough to figure out. There are no suggestions for adjusting the heli, but the servo linkages are adjustable in length if the swashplate needs to be levelled.
The build quality on the model seems to be quite good and I like the sturdy metal frame. One oddity is that the swashplate does not have a bearing or bushing between it and the rotor mast. This makes the control system simpler, but the required clearance between the two parts creates enough slop that cyclic control effectiveness is reduced and the heli is not as responsive as it could be.
The Phoenix is very stable in flight, which was welcome as this is the first single rotor heli I have flown in about 15 years. The flight controls are responsive enough, but they don't provide a lot of travel so this heli is hard to control in any kind of wind. There isn't enough nose down pitch to overcome a headwind of more than a few mph. It is better than my large coaxial heli, but not by a large margin. The WLToys V912 handles windy conditions much better. The battery pack is a generous 1000mAh but flight times are in the 7-8 minute range. I think this is a good heli for practicing nose-in hovering flight because of it's stability. As supplied, there is no adjustment possible to get large control throws from the pitch and roll servos because the control horns have been cut off to only leave the innermost hole to attach the linkages to. The model would benefit from longer throws, which would be possible if longer control horns can be found that fit the supplied servos.
