Here are some first impressions of my computer I ordered from Skytech. This is a long, so if you don’t want to read through it all here is a summary. Posted April 26, 2018.
For my first couple of days using my new computer I’d say it is a very good system and would recommend it provided you understand this is a gamer machine. That means there is no ‘new purchase’ hand holding manuals or software, just plug it in, load your games and have fun. Also, there is no DVD drive and the wireless WiFi USB adapter they provide is way too slow, bring your own.
It has very good performance when you consider the price. I think the younger crowd would like the looks of the case (I am fifty something so I am not really into bling). It feels solid and it has SEVEN fans along with liquid cooling. I would not hesitate to buy another at the price I paid provided I could get it in a more normal looking (boring?) case.
I ordered my computer April 15. It shipped UPS ground from California to my home city of Indianapolis on April 23, a day before estimated time of arrival.
Listed shipping weight was 42 pounds but it felt lighter than that, lighter than the 40 pound bag of salt I buy for my water softener. It was packaged well, plenty of space in the box so something were to pierce the box a couple of inches it wouldn’t hit the computer.
Unboxing, manuals, and equipment.
This is my first boutique made computer and was a little surprised at the lack of documentation that came with the computer. There isn’t any home computer hand holding here. All I found was a letter asking that I leave a nice comment on Amazon about my purchase. Perhaps this should have been expected as this computer is marketed towards serious gamers and they tend to have some knowledge of the hardware they are using and don’t need new user hand holding.
Once I got it out of the box I saw there was special molded shipping packaging inside the computer that I had to remove, that was good to see and I felt better about the possibility of parts moving around inside the computer during shipping.
This computer shipped with a mouse, keyboard and a USB WiFi adapter. Both mouse and keyboard looked a little fancy but not too much out of the ordinary. The mouse had extra buttons on it, I continue to use my own mouse and keyboard only because I am comfortable with them. I have read reviews about the WiFi adapter that ships with the computer that its way too slow. I looked at the box to the adaptor once then threw it back in the shipping box never to be used.
The computer case looks a little bigger in real life that on Amazon‘s site. And it feels very solid compared to my 6 year old Acer that I bought on sale at Fry’s to replace a dead computer.
First power up
Using the standard cables from my 6 year old Acer that died on me I plug in the computer and it quickly fired up. Much faster than my Acer even when it was new. And once it fired up is when I found a couple of things made me scratch my head a bit about the hardware.
First, the lights in the case. It has glass sides and glowing red lights. I knew when I ordered the computer it had this case but it is brighter than I expected. Its not something to my liking but for a young serious gamer I guess it would be cool to show off to his or her gamer buddies.
Next the fans in the case. This computer has the fancy liquid cooling, so I assumed (yes, that is on me) that this computer would be much quieter than my Acer and it is not. The reason being is that there are SEVEN fans in this computer! Three in front pulling in air, three on top, pulling out air and one in the back pulling in air. The fans are listed as a feature and I missed it.
My computer sitting within 18 inches of my knee and within 3 to 4 feet of my ear. I can barely hear the fans running if gaming at normal sound levels but when your not playing a game, music, you tube or something it sounds like you are in the kitchen listening to the fans of large appliance running softly in the back ground. Its something I will get used to but had I known this before I ordered I may not have bought this computer with this case setup. This case has basically has an open front and open top.
Last head scratcher is something I wouldn’t notice had the case not had glass sides. This computer has a 250 GB SSD. I knew when I ordered the SSD brand was not specified so I didn’t expect a Samsung EVO.
It shipped with an HP SSD. HP, I didn’t think HP carried SSD so I looked up a review on Tom’s hardware.
What they have listed is a HP S700 SSD, a Dram less SSD geared to the value customer looking for a solid low priced SSD. In other words, this is no Samsung, performance wise it didn’t test well in some areas but this computer still seems very responsive.
Software and overall experience.
So far I really like this computer. It came with almost zero bloat. Just some programs like Furmark, GeForce experience, Launch app center, team view 13 and Prime95. I briefly looked these over, since there was no documentation or any anything I didn’t launch or permit any of these programs to install anything.
Other than some computer tuning I really don’t know what they do.
Windows flies, and I mean really fast! Its on the latest version of Windows and just flies like Windows 7 did on my Acer when new. I haven’t timed it with a watch but this computer wakes up from sleep in about 5 seconds!
When I tried to get my printer working, windows at first couldn’t find the driver for my Cannon laser printer. When I put the computer to sleep then woke it back up, it found the drivers and loaded them.
After making a recovery flash drive I installed the following. My old copy of Microsoft works, my old copy of Age of mythology, Steam client, Chrome, Path of Exile, and Xcom enemy unknown. That all went smooth although I messed up and put Path of Exile on the SSD.
Path of Exile, Xcom and Age of Mythology were all a download. Path of Exile from the games website, Xcom and Age of Mythology from Steam. All three still took a long time to download. I was wired connected to Uverse when downloading.
Path of Exile is my current game of choice and so far I have around 6 hours into it and it looks GREAT!
I have yet to give it a real workout running with a maxed out party with lots of animation going on, but so far I am running 60 frames a second, smooth as butter compared to my old Acer. Task switching from the game to Chrome almost at the speed of blinking an eye.
The sound is very good also.
So far overall I really like this computer. If you are a gamer type and this computer fits your budget I say go for it. Especially if you want to invite friends over and show off your new rig. I admit I don’t have the latest and most punishing games but this machines not once slowed down lower than 58 frames a second, and the setting are at factory levels, I don’t over clock.
I have set a reminder in Cortana to update my comments on my computer June 15 to update my experiences with my computer. By then I should have the “new car smell” phase out of my system and tell you about my experience.
So when my last rig truly needed an upgrade, i decided to purchase a turn key gaming rig so i had someone to point a finger to when it has an issue.
I spent about 3 months researching all the known brands of gaming PC's, on their websites as well on Amazon and other electronics-based websites. I settled on the SkyTech product. Mainly due to the number of features packed into an attractive case. So far i have zero issues with the company or the PC. If the number of emails requesting feedback is an indication of their customer engagement, i would say they are very responsive.
It is quiet. Very, it sits beside me on top of the desk; i have to check that it is on.
It plays all that steam has to offer. Verm 2 is pretty intense now at 60fps and ultra settings.
i do not have VR. the computer does pass the steam VR test for both major platforms. so i cannot comment further on VR feedback.
i have an ultrawide LG monitor, and all i can say is skyrim is beautiful place to visit.
The PC boots and reboots incredibly fast thanks to the SSD.
I love the case, it looks great. the lighting is maybe a bit dim, but thats not why i bought it.
i am lost to what else to comment on, i needed a solid platform to play games and manage my home business work. This computer exceeds the scope of my search with ease. i would buy from Skytech and would recommend this PC to anyone who has needs similar to mine.
