I have installed & managed school networks & know how quickly kids can beat the system. At home we have been using OpenDNS to protect our entire family & closely monitor our (younger) children's limited online activities. However, as they get older I knew we needed a better watchdog.

Skydog allows me to assign custom filter & calendar "Policies" by "User" not "Device" which is what parents need because we often share our devices with our kids. Now when my son borrows my wife's laptop to play an online game, she can quickly change the laptop "device" from her account to his account and the laptop is immediately locked-down to the stricter filter settings.

Rather than create an "Account" for each family member, I created accounts to match the "Policies" & "Calendar" settings I want to enforce. Currently our accounts are: Homework, Games, Family, Parents, TV, and Ooma. When a device is placed in the "Homework" account the kids only have access to about 10 school-approved homework websites. (Most teachers/schools can provide a list & this way kids can find what they need quickly vs. wasting time searching the entire 'net...) The "Games" account adds some learning games & allows their Wii U & 3DS devices to call home for updates, etc. When devices are set to these accounts our kids can have access to the Internet without our supervision because their access is very limited...

I setup our "Family" account to use one of Skydog's stricter family policies and our "Parent" account to one of the less strict policies which allows access to popular social media sites & search engines. Lastly, I gave our "TV" account higher bandwidth for Netflix devices & our "Ooma" the highest bandwidth for trouble-free calls over the Internet.

Our kids have been using YouTube since they were using two. My six year old daughter can operate an iPhone better than I can. So, when we got to the age where they are starting to use those connected devices independent of us if opened some deep philosophical questions...
- what sites should we potentially restrict the to see / not see.
- How do we manage the fact that our two kids are at different stages in terms of what sites they use.
- How do we ensure that they can freely use the internet for school research, etc - without feeling like we're policing them.
- How do we give them access to social networks to chat with gramma, but not so they get approached by strangers / bullies.

The Skydog router amazingly solves all of the above, and does it in a super simple way.

We can set different content filtering policies for each child, and at different hours during each day. That way, my younger daughter can only go to pure children's educational sites and some supervised YouTube, whereas my older son can use Wikipedia and some image libraries. Neither of them can ever go to porn, gambling or seedy websites.

The entire network took me less than half an hour to configure, and I'm pretty sure that's I'll need to do until their surfing habits need to change.

I realize that It sounds like I work for them but full disclosure - I'm just a customer who bought one. I backed them on kickstarter and I'm so impressed with how the final product has turned out. Really looking forward to checking in on the network over the next couple of weeks on the included mobile web app to see how my configuration holds up.

Definitely think that any household with 1 (or especially more) kid should have one of these.

After using this now for more than a month, I find I have to downgrade it a bit more. I do still use it and it's potential is fantastic. However, to filter any content, this device depends upon a cloud DNS called SkyDNS. This component seems to have issues and causes the router to bog down and lose performance. They claim to have fixed the problem and it has improved. However, I still see sporadic problems with mine and there are reports in their forums of people still encountering the issue.

First, let me say that I really like this product. It is a fantastic step in the right direction. I've been using an alternate product and this one has potential to far exceed it. As of now, it's missing a couple of key features, in my opinion. However, it's an early version of a Kickstarter project and I expect to see those features added soon. Here are my pros and cons:

* Fast - I have a 50MB connection. Currently, this device lets me unleash nearly all of this speed wirelessly. I see between 45 and 49MB most of the time now. This is particularly true close to the device. My previous router/gateway (iBoss) that I used for home protection only allows about 14MB max.
* capacity - by this I mean support for many devices. I have about 25 devices for the house at this time with 4 children and 2 adults. I can run all devices, map them to owners and set rules per owner. It's fantastic.
* flexibility - so many features for managing access. Apart from a couple of missing filter and blocking options that I'll mention in a cons, this thing really lets me customize the settings according to the user/device.
* tracking - we can quickly see how the kids are spending time on the internet.
