UPDATE: I have listened to the score twice now on its own, and I have also seen the film. The music works very well within the context of the movie, and its slightly less impressive while listening to it on its own. But overall, "Skyfall" is one of the year's best soundtracks.David Arnold's music on Casino Royale (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) and Quantum of Solace was very impressive, but I thought it was time for a new composer to try their luck with Bond. Furthermore, I was very excited when it was announced that Sam Mendes would direct "Skyfall" because I knew that meant that Thomas Newman would likely be scoring the film -- the two frequently work together, and Newman has written some excellent music for Mendes (particularly "Road to Perdition" and "Revolutionary Road").Newman's score for "Skyfall" is everything that a film score should be. It has tracks that are very thrilling and bombastic, and others that are full of sorrow. The music conveys the epic scope of the Bond franchise; but the tone also gives a more personal/emotional sense that the other Bond scores have not been able to achieve.
