Further aggravating the problem is the fact that the Skylander website and all fan sites and FAQ's assume you still have the fundamental knowledge of how skylanders works. So I will lay out what I had to learn the hard way.
WHAT IS "SKYLANDERS"?
Ignoring the story that the kids are interested in, for the parents this boils down to buying $10-15 figurines that are necessary to "unlock" the same character in the video game. The is done by placing the figurine on the "portal" (a round electronic platform that connect to your game console) and in real time the game switches to that character. Each character belongs to one of 8 "elements" which really means that your child will want at least one character from each element; as rewards and side sections of the game can only be accessed by the appropriate element. What a money racket huh? The positive thing though is that the figures are detailed and well made and our child plays with them off line as well.
WHAT IS A STARTER PACK?
The starter packs, like this one, come with a few figurines, a portal, and a copy of *A* video game for the particular platform you have chose. THIS IS THE CRITICAL PART. The IOS video game is NOT the same as the Wii/PS3/Xbox game(s). Rather, the IOS game "Battlegrounds" is like a mini game in the skylanders world that has the reduced scope of a mobile app. Whereas the Wii/PS3/Xbox versions of the game has story, cutscenes, adventure, and game "platforming"; the IOS game "Battlegrounds" is just a series of battles on maps. Clear the map, and go to the next one, ad naseum. For this reason, the IOS Starterpack is probably not the first starter pack you want to go with. Instead, get the appropriate Wii/PS3/Xbox version.
SO THE IOS SKYLANDERS GAME IS NOT THE SAME AS THE GAMES THAT COME WITH THE WII/PS3/XBOX?
Nope. And they are clear about this. As the date of this writing, there are 3 action-adventure games for the Wii/PS3/Xbox called: Spyro's Adventure, Giants, and Swap Force. These games have cutscenes (mini movies which move the story along), almost Zelda (RPG) like adventuring, and many different types of game levels that will give the child many many hours to play. In contrast, this IOS "Battlegrounds" version is a simplified mini-game compared to the console versions. It consists of simple hexagon maps and the player moves along the hexes. When they encounter a "bad guy", the game zooms into the "arena" and they do battle with a predictable number of adversaries. It becomes repetitive within 5 minutes. We ended up buying the console version too, and my child rarely plays the IOS version anymore.
WHY WOULD I WANT TO GET THIS VERSION THEN?
Good question. Assuming your child already has the console version, then I'd recommend that all of these criteria be met for someone to be interested in this version:
- the child doesn't already have any of the figures in this pack
- the child wants a mobile (iPad) game set in the Skylanders world that is more "casual" than the console version
- you absolutely want the portal to swap characters
- you're buying this stuff anyways
DO YOU REALLY NEED THE PORTAL?
Not really. While it's more fun for the child to physically swap the figurines, it's not necessary as the player can select the character from a menu. In fact, the player can purchase more characters IN-GAME and play them without buying the real figurine! This is in start contrast to the console version which only let's you play a character for which you have a figurine. When ended up also buying the console starter pack... which gave us another portal.... and this IOS portal is NEVER USED ANYMORE.
WAIT I SEE THE SAME IOS "BATTLEGROUNDS" GAME IN THE APPLE STORE.
Yup. You can buy the app separately in the apple store for $6.99. It's the same game. That's why the app doesn't require you to have the physical figurines or the portal.
SO DO YOU NEED THE FIGURINES TO PLAY THIS GAME?
No. This app let's you select characters in-game, and even earn enough "coins" to unlock other characters. If you play enough, you've unlocked so many characters that there's no point in using the portal/figurines.
ARE THE NEW VERSIONS OF THE CHARACTERS COMPATIBLE?
This is one advantage of the IOS game. Because you can update the app via iTunes, it always supports ALL characters. When new characters come out, they release an update so the new characters are supported. This is not the case with the console version. (Side note: because of this, I recommend getting the LATEST game in the console version so the most character figures available at the stores is compatible with the game.)
So, if you're planning to buy the $6.99 app, plus the 3 characters that come in this pack (worth $9-10 each), and/or want the IOS portal, then you might want this pack. When the price of this pack is below the price of the separate pieces you are planning to buy anyways, then this pack is worth it. Otherwise, skip this pack and just get the console version. I'm knocking the score down to 3 stars because even after careful reading of the package, the above information was not even remotely clear.
