I bought this to see what all the hype around Skylanders was all about. There's really two components to the product so I talk about the game and toys separately.

The Game:
Skylanders is targeted at children, but the gameplay is compelling enough to keep adults interested. You swap characters in and out of the game by placing them on the portal of power and which characters you choose impacts your strategy and abilities. It feels and plays like "Diablo light" with a lot of replay value unlocking all the hidden items, areas, characters, and achievements. You may find yourself wanting to replay levels over and over to either best your time, unlock awards, or simply to level up different characters.

The Toys:
The toys are well made and can stand up to the beating your average kid is going to inflict on them. They look great displayed as a collection on a shelf or can be thrown loosely in a bag or box. They don't have any articulating parts like action figures, but I often see kids playing with them right along with other toys. Beware the money sink. This game promotes and encourages purchases of additional toy characters throughout so be warned if your kid is a completionist or is likely to want to "collect them all". It will get expensive.

I purchased this Starter Kit for my 4 year old son however my 8 year old also loves the game. I am a gamer so I'm always skeptical when it comes to xbox games. The game comes with action figures and a "portal" that plugs into the USB port.

You begin the campaign and place a character on the portal. It glows (no batteries needed) and that is the character you begin with in the game. When your character loses all of his/her power, you simply place another character on the portal. Game play is in 3rd person and it does support 2 players. It can be a bit challenging with two players as you have to have teamwork. Neither character can just run off...you have to stay together.

My 4 year old gets excited to play and loves choosing his characters for each level. I wasn't sure how difficult it would be simply from seeing a small demo, but there is nothing complicated about the game. He navigates the maps well and there are no complicated button sequences.

I got this for my son on his 10th birtday. He was totally surprised and amazed when he opened. Then he started playing right away, and practically he hasn't stop ever since (last December), well, in a way of speaking...
The game is very well designed. The characters or figures are very well done, in fact my son loves them and plays with them even when not playing the video game, as action figures.
I would definitely recommed this for kids up to 12 years of age, probably; even though I, myself have enjoyed playing it with my son from time to time. He plays most of the time wiht his sister (shes is 15), and they both have a really good time.
The only drawback, so to speak, is the fact that he now wants to collect all the 40 + characters, and even though they are relatively inexpensive, still is a good money you'll have to put there to get them all.

I think this game was an excellent bit of fan service to people who bought the original game. If you had a Skylander from each element, you could access all the content from the first game. With the purchase of Giants, a giant is included, and all you need to access all the content is any single giant and one from each element. With the next game, Swap Force, you need at least half of the Swap force figures to access all the content. Giants is a fun game. I think you should be able to select different difficulty levels in one playthrough like you can in Swap Force, but that's okay. It's an excellent addition to the series and fixes a lot of issues from Spyro's Adventure.

My 4-year old found out about this through a classmate... I bought the starter pack since I had an Xbox 360, and sure enough he loves it. He can do almost everything by himself, which is nice.. Lego games, he needed help with a lot of things and I'm not very good at video games, so it caused a lot of frustration for both of us. The only negative I have as of right now, is I wish they had a variety of starter packs. We bought this for the grandparents to have at their house too, and now they're all duplicated. It would have been nice to be able to pick a different giant starter pack.

Both sons like this game but my youngest is the most excited about it. He got it for his birthday in Jan. It's now March and we just now got it working on a regular basis. We had some technical difficulties with his xbox, I guess. The game would play on any other machine we tried, just not HIS, which was horrible for him. BUT, after spending 3 days working with xbox technical support, we finally got it working and he's been playing it every day since.
What I love about this game is that he's working through levels and towards some kind of goal, unlike his other favorite game, COD. Ugh. If he HAS to play a video game, this is the one I want him to play. It's expensive in that each character costs $10ish but I think it's worth it.

This is a fun sequel to the original game (we're on the xbox 360). I love that you can use your current characters and that new ones exist. I think the giant characters are maybe a bit too strong, making the game too easy at times, even for my six year old. My other quibble is that the game is pretty short. I really hope that maybe a few DLC expansions will come down the pipe. I think we'd pay another ten bucks for a couple expansions that add new worlds and levels and don't require purchasing the special pieces to unlock the worlds (like the pirate or ice lands of skylander's 1).
