Another Skylanders Game , Kids Love It

My 8 year old saved up his allowance for this and heis not disappointed. He says its a little different than the console version we have on the xbox , but mostly the same. I am not sure what Skylanders has done to my poor child that makes him think he needs the same game on two different consoles, but he does.

All his Skylanders work on this ( from the previous Skylanders games only, his Trap Team Skylanders are from a newer game and do not work on this portal ) which is good , because I would not put it past them to make little tiny figures for the 3ds so that I would have to rebuy them. Each game that comes out requires a new portal of power. I have a drawer in my living room with a few older portals that are now useless , as the new ones are made backwards compatible. I think when I have enough I might make daisy chain them into a necklace and wear it as a status symbol, just to show everyone the insane amount of money we have spent on Skylanders over the years. I keep waiting for them to grow out of them, but for now, they make my boys happy, and that makes me happy.

I purchased this starter set for my 7 year old daughter because she said she wanted it for Christmas. I had no idea what Skylanders were and I don't think she really did either, lol. But for the price, it wasn't bad if buying for a DS so we opted to try this out. I was pleasantly surprised! It came with 1 game and 3 different "figures" which you sync up with your DS. It was a little confusing at first having to use bluetooth to get everything set up, which my 7 year old couldn't do on her own. But once we figured it out, it was pretty cool because you can take the top half of one figure and match it with the bottom half of a different figure and basically create a whole new character with different "powers" or skills. I like that the peices are interchangeable with others so really, you have more than just 3 figures, whatever the math is, i can't do, haha. I would recommend for someone just starting out in the Skylanders world.

This is the best 3ds version of skylanders yet. The story is funny, and the platforming action is simple but getting 3 stars on each level is certainly challenging.

One new feature to the series is that it saves a "virtual collection" of every skylander scanned into the game. This is nice because you can pick any of your skylanders at any time, but a downside because it makes the game a little too easy if you have lots of figures.

Still, a great, solid entry into the series.

My kids love this game, and being able to get the exclusive color variant was nice. It would have been nicer had Activision put the same swappable characters in this starter pack as they did in the others. The two swappable characters in this starter pack are available for individual purchase. That means if you want the dark version of the characters (GameStop exclusive) you have to buy another console starter pack or go to e-bay

If you've liked the other two 3DS games, this will be more of the same, but they've really improved things with the ability to load all your Skylanders into the game from the start. I know it takes a little away from the "swap figures" gameplay that Skylanders is built on, but for portability, I think it was a big improvement. Certainly a good add-on to the main console games.
