Product Description
As a teaser for some more detailed Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure news that we will be bringing you next week during E3, Activision has released some character vignettes, which tell us a little more about the characters that are set to feature in the game’s starter pack. Skylanders Spyro’s adventure involves real life toys, which players will have to place on the Portal of Power to bring them into the game. The three toy characters that come in the starter pack are: Spyro, Gill Grunt and Trigger Happy. We have some information and some short clips where players can see all three characters in action.

The Skylanders Story
For generations, the Skylanders -- a diverse group of mythical creatures, each with their own powers, personality and tendencies -- have used their magical powers, weapons and levelable battle skills to protect their homeland, the Skylands. But now, an evil tyrant with the powers of a portal master has frozen and banished them to Earth. Only you, a portal master yourself, can physically put Skylanders on the Portal of Power -- a conduit between this world and theirs -- and bring them back to life in their world where they can battle to save Skylands forever.
Action Figures with Brains
Skylanders are special physical action figures that come to life in-game. Just take a Skylander, place it on the included Portal of Power, which is synched to your game console and a representation of your chosen Skylander will come to life in the video game and do your bidding. There are over 30 Skylanders in total - each with unique abilities and powers (three are included in your starter pack). Skylander action figures remember their in-game experiences and upgrades as they explore the mysterious world of Skylands, battle menacing creatures and collect treasures. Conveniently, it doesn't matter what gaming system your friends have at their house, the Skylanders work on and across all major video game systems. That means that you can take your Skylanders over to your friend's house, drop them on their Portal of Power and your Skylanders will come to life in the game.

CONS:
First of all, right now the Skylanders individual characters are pretty difficult to find. Nearly every time I go to Best Buy/Target/GameStop/Toys r US, the shelves are completely empty. Also, people are selling the characters on Amazon for way more than they are worth-- sorry, I would never even pay $20 for a character that would cost me $8 in the stores. You just have to keep calling the stores and just randomly check them. However, we have heard that come July 2012 (I know, so far away) that the company is going to start mass producing more of them (I don't think they anticipated these to be so popular, but after Christmas you couldn't find them anywhere). To go hand in hand with the unavailability, there are a lot of parts of the game (within-level areas) that you cannot get to unless you have at least 1 character from each element (fire, earth, tech, air, life, undead, magic, water). For example, in a level there might be an area that you cannot get to unless you have a Skylander from the Life element. Once they are easier to find, it won't be so bad and this will no longer be a con.
Another CON is that in the end if you want to be able to do everything you possibly can in this game, you are probably spending well over $100 for it, though it can increase the longevity of being able to play the game. It is fun to level up new characters and see their abilities, though, so it is sort of worth it (in the stores, the individual characters are between $7.99 and $9.99-- Target and Best Buy are $7.99).
A third CON is that a couple of the characters we have have issues communicating with the Portal of Power. It doesn't happen with all of them, but one or two of them have trouble. When we place the character on the portal, it will act like it is getting ready to let you play as the character, then it will say "please put a skylander on the portal of power" even though it is already on there. Sometimes we have to try several times or hold the character hovering above the portal until it actually puts that character in the game, and then set it down. I'm guessing there is some kind of issue with the character itself (maybe something happened to the chip inside it) where it isn't connecting right.
PROS:
This game is a fun, kid-friendly game. It has a pretty good replay value (meaning you can beat the game, but still go back and replay to either complete each level 100% or use new characters you acquire over time to replay the game). It is also a great 2 player game.
Skylanders are "portable." What I mean is that if you level up your character and have all these abilities, you can take your Skylander to a friend's who has the game and play it on their console (no matter which console it is) and your stats will remain with that character. For example, if you have the game on Xbox and you are Spyro and you are level 6 and you have upgraded your fighting abilities, you can take your Spyro Skylander to a friend's house who plays it on the Wii and you can use your character with all stats remaining.
The Skylanders are fun to collect without being ridiculously overpriced. I think $8 is a fair price to pay for a new character.
Overall, I'd recommend this game. I think it's really fun and a break from the usual types of games I play.
Favorite Skylanders I have played with so far: Bash, Trigger Happy, and my husband got Drobot and likes him a lot.
Skylanders are a diverse cast of "heroic" characters with different "attacks" and skills. Cartoon violence: Some of them use knives, arrows or throw flames; there are no guns (although Trigger Happy "shoots coins" that look like ammunition). The "bad guys" attacked are non-human -- abstract "monsters," spiders, etc, with no blood. Young kids might be sensitive to explosions, destruction, creepy animals. Some are "Undead" (Like Halloween) themed with skeletons and other morbid motifs. This is not a human universe, so there is no depiction of children engaging in occult or incantations, but there are jokes about death and ghosts that I'm not crazy about.
This product is an X-Box game, X-Box Portal (Hardware to connect to the X-Box) and three Skylander figures. The figures are cute, very detailed plastic toys that work with any Portal (if a friend has a Wii for instance) and also include "Code Cards" so you can play that character in your online game. Do not lose the code cards. The Starter Pack has a big sticker poster, and each Skylander you collect has a sticker to add so you can see which ones you have.
"Adventure Mode" involves level after level of running around "saving" somebody, attacking bad guys, and stopping to do little puzzles. We have not yet played in "Battle Mode" -- apparently that requires a second X-Box controller and we just got one for little sister -- hope to have an extensive Skylander vs. Skylander tourney soon, complete with brackets! I told my kids no new Skylanders until we have more fun battling them against each other (and NO Legendaries, which are essentially duplicate characters with enhanced powers -- that's a line I drew).
COOL THINGS:
-Fun, long-lasting gameplay that is challenging without being too frustrating. Maybe too simple for older kids who want seriously challenging video gaming, but for ages 5-10 it's a great time.
-Online game has good child-safety settings
-Toys work with different game platforms
-Female Skylanders have comparable powers and are not "sexy" (although there are not nearly as many of them as male)
-At $9 each, you can buy more action figures for reasonably-priced toy for a treat, Easter Basket etc.
-Kid will jump out of bed early to play Skylanders before school
-Kid will help with extra chores to earn "Skylander money."
-Kids love to talk about them at school and it's relatively harmless
MILD WARNINGS:
-Cartoon violence
-No educational value to speak off
-At least one character makes sexist/sexy jokes about getting one buxom female character to "date" him. I'm not a fan.
-Kids want to play Skylanders ALL THE TIME
-Kids want to buy Skylanders ALL THE TIME
-At $9 each they add up. Please don't ask me what I've spent on this
-Higher levels of game play require purchasing new Skylanders ($9, or sets of three for $20) or Adventure packs ($20).
-Some Skylanders are out of stock and hard to find or only available at "collectors" prices.
