Skylanders has proven to be a wonderful canvas of sounds for Lorne Balfe to string together. Swap Force is the third installment in the Skylanders game. The premise of the game is that you get action figures, place them on a pad and they appear in the game as playable characters. Swap Force introduces a new set of characters where the tops and bottom halves are swappable leading to many custom combinations. Hence the name Swap Force. Lorne's score for the third time around I feel is stronger, more melodic and more colorful.

Skylanders is a very broad platformer aimed at the younger crowd. The music here isn't so much meant to guide a strong narrative as it's meant to bring this world and the characters to life. So each chapter of the game is going to have different characteristics, different pacing and different tones. The music really incorporates many different styles and genres as well. At times it feels like a swashbuckling adventure, at times a science fiction mission and in one track Balfe conjures the Morricone spirit for a western romp. The score is bookended by his terrific Swap Force theme. It's tons of fun, the melodies are engaging and each track really stands its own ground. Balfe does a good job of not making it light and fluffy, but rather whimsical and charming. He uses a lot of neat textures and as I mentioned the different styles really do engage you. The tracks do have that looping video game feel, but given the nature of the game that's what was needed. This is a perfect light adventure score that offers up a platter of enjoyable music. The melodies and tracks have some really terrific moments; some of the best of the entire trilogy so far.

Skylanders: Swap Force is supremely enjoyable. The music truly brings the world of the game to vivid life.
