Its a low-depth velvet material that feels like synthetic suede - a little slippery and nice p-willow gray. "Smoke" is an appropriate name for the color. I like it, its pretty and I prefer it to grainy or canvas upholstery.
My inspiration is glam French modern... silvery shantung and crystal lamps, metal crystal wall pieces, since the headboard is neutral, the bedding I am using are all jewel tones (plum/purple with gold, teal and sapphire shantung, metallic burgundy and ruby velvet... and for summer, its white/ivory sateen, mint green and lavender). I originally wanted to get the "Peacock" because I love the color, but then that would really limit me on the bed linens, so I decided to go with a neutral and just glam it up with crystals.
The height - that many people seem to complain about - is obvious, the mattress WILL sit lower down... and the reason is simple... if you get JUST the headboard, without the box frame, its about 4-5" lower than it would be with the side pieces... which would support the mattress and raise it up about 4-5 inches, without those, the mattress drops to the where that height.
I bought a metal frame and put 5" risers under it - benefits are two-fold... storage underneath like a platform bed, and no weirdness on the mattress height. Granted, you have to be good about attaching the headboard to the bedframe, if they are not connected, the mattress and frame can shift away from the headboard... especially being a bit higher up, if you have to slide off the side to dismount. ;)
I did manage to put this together in a day...by myself... start out organized with all the pieces sorted, and understand what you are doing, don't try to 'wing' it.... I would recommend doing the base first then the wings - but the main piece needs to be up off the floor a bit to get the wings on it, I put it on a dining room table.
If you want to get fancy, order some 20mm crystal tacks to attach to the buttons. you need 21 of them to get all 3 rows of the 7 tufted buttons. I tried tapping them in with a rubber mallet, and it was not working that great, so I broke off the tacks, a little tip remained, and I rubber cemented them into the buttons... the little post remnant on the tacks helped poke into the button and adhere. They look good a year later...
I love how it feels and the vibrant color is dark and rich looking... Looks expensive! You would never believe you could buy this for under $1000
I added bedding that probably makes no sense matching it together but who cares .. I love it ! I probably need to remove the box spring. There is a spa sensation bed frame with 14" storage space , so it's high.. add the box spring and mattress and a memory foam bed on top. Too high to really display the head board like it deserves.
This headboard is very sexy and knows it !! Meow !!
Now for the drag part of the order ... Received it and laid out all the hardware put the wings on 1st and discovered that the back of the head board only had three holes to attach the metal legs. One side had two holes for the bolts to mount through the slots to attach the leg. The other side was drilled with only one hole, to make matters worse the nut that is recessed in the head board was not the correct size for the bolt ! I tried all four bolts and none of them fit. I contacted Amazon and was advised to contact the factory. I did , no response. I tried to chase down a bolt from Lowes and nothing fit. Almost a week later I was contacted by the factory asking for pictures. Another week later a new bag of hardware arrived.
I will try and attach it correctly and hope they work this time. The head board is ot attached to the frame and supported by the wings only.
Beautiful Head Board Skyline !!! Need better quality control and inspection before you ship. No regrets though, I love it !!
