Editorial Reviews
2014 debut from one of the most powerful voices in indie rock today. Produced by Chris Funk (Decemberists, Black Prairie, Red Fang), the album introduces Sallie's all girl line-up - Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce & Blue Giant) on bass, Amanda Spring (Point Juncture, WA) on drums & Cristina Cano (Albatross & Siren & the Sea) on keyboards. Sallie Ford grew up playing music in Asheville, NC. in 2006, she decided to move to Portland, OR where she met her band 'The Sound Outside.' Together they released three albums and an EP but parted ways in 2013. This album has a surf, garage rock & classic rock feel. Sallie proclaims SLAP BACK to be an 'ode to all babe rockers from Joan Jett, Blondie and Pat Benetar to PJ Harvey & Exene Cervenka.'

In 2014, Sallie went solo and "Slap Back" is her debut. The difference is that in her "old" band, the guys in the band helped get the songs together. On her solo debut, Sallie takes all songwriting on herself and relies on her new all-female backing back for instrumental support only.
Apart from that though, you could just about bill this as the next album from "Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside" and not upset the apple cart (much). The overall style and feel of "Slap Back" is not a dramatic departure from her work with the Sound Outside so much as a subtle expanding of the overall sound. It's still based in rockabilly, old-style rock and roll, indie rock, garage rock or whatever you want to call it, but songs like "Let Go" (one of the album's highlights) feature a keyboard undercurrent even while the song itself is still rooted in the basics. And that's a good thing: a step forward sonically, but still sticking with what she does best: straight-ahead rock and roll.
Like her work with the Sound Outside, the songs here are short and sweet: the longest of the 13 tracks is 4:21 and only 3 songs overall break the 3:40 mark. So nothin' fancy here, but that doesn't mean there's not plenty to sink your teeth into. The music is energetic, fun and catchy. Lyrically, one magazine article described Sallie's approach as "what a middle finger would sound like", and I have to agree. She's young and possibly a little bit wild, but not about to apologize for it. The rock and roll spirit is alive and well in Sallie without question.
There are better songs on "Slap Back", but the track "Dive In" seems to sum Sallie up pretty well:
"I want to dive right in, I don't care about mistakes;
I want to take a chance, `cos that is what it takes."
Musically and lyrically, Sallie Ford seems to go where the music takes her: the music is raw and basic with a minimum of adornments, and the lyrics are straightforward and honest. No punches pulled. You're only young once, so... go for it and worry about the consequences later. And isn't that what rock and roll used to be about once upon a time?
That said, much as I like it, this album falls a little short of the last full-length album she did with the Sound Outside (2013's "Untamed Beast", which is a near flawless album), so honestly, I'd give it 4.5 stars instead of 5, but I'm rounding up to 5 instead of down to 4 because she's more than earned it. The songs aren't *quite* as catchy as those on "Untamed Beast", but overall it's still very much another solid effort from Sallie and one I have no problem recommending to anyone who likes their rock on the raw side. She is definitely my favorite new(ish) artist, so go ahead: dive in! Grab this one and/or "Untamed Beast" and you'll see EXACTLY what I mean.
