Rod Brown and Julius Lester bring history to life in this profoundly moving exploration of the slave experience. From the Middle Passage to the auction block, from the whipping post to the fight for freedom, this book presents not just historical facts, but the raw emotions of the people who lived them. Inspired by Rod Brown's vivid paintings, Julius Lester has written a text that places each of us squarely inside the skin of both slave and slaveowner. It will capture the heart of every reader, black or white, young or old.

If you want your children to learn about what really happened on the slave ships, this is the book. The book has some images that may disturb little children, but it is definitely appropriate for 4th grade and up. The harsh realities of the slave trade are difficult to digest, but we must learn about the past so we can appreciate the future.

Beautiful artwork, serious topics. I initially bought it to use as a discussion launcher for middle school students. I would be hesitant to to leave it out as a classroom book, because there are depictions of nudity and violence that would be hard to defend to parents and administrators. I want to be clear- this is not a "dirty book" and it is not inappropriate. It is an accurate depiction of slavery and its consequences. It is not "g rated."

Our son is studying the Civil War in elementary school and we felt slave life as it was being presented in class was very watered down. So this book was purchased as an enhancement to what he was learning. It starts in Africa, describes the slave ships and the cruelty that was part of life for a slave. This book is more similar to the way I remember slavery was presented when I was young (1970s). It is exactly what we were looking for.

Beautiful book. I felt like my 5th grade son's education on slavery was not fully addressing the scope of the atrocities. This was an eye opener for him and anything that helps to build compassion and awareness in my children gets 5 stars from me.

It is thorough but rather heavy for a child to take because it is such a sad story! Detailed pictures are well done but I was glad to finish reading it.

This is a great book however it is aimed more for older readers. I was looking more for something with bigger words and more child friendly for a younger child. However it covers everything to teach kids about slavery
