I would have to say that this belongs in the bible of funk. Almost all of it is of the quick tempo danceable type funk. These guys displayed the perfect ability of blend simple grooves and intricate little passages which makes for killer "disco jazz" that I think anyone into danceable music would dig. Own this if you like funk because it is among one of the best funk albums out there.

This album introduced the world to Slave- The Baddest Self-Contained Funk Unit to ever come out of Dayton, Ohio! Playing this album is so refreshing because today, talented musicians are hard to come by. "Slide" is a stompin' funk jam featuring a nasty,red-hot guitar solo by Mark "Drac" Hicks and a Bass Solo Sharp Enuff 2 Slice from Mr. Mark Adams. It's truly a classic. "You and Me"and "Love Me" are also first-rate funk. The Horn-Flavored "Screw Your Wig On Tite" would have been a great choice for a 2nd Single. "Party Hardy",a potent jam that commands you to get down,is my favorite track. To hear Mark Hicks' electrifying guitar riffs along with Mark Adams' slidin',slappin'& frettin' sounds on bass, is a pure funk experience. This album has that raw and aggressive late 70's funk vibe to it. Slave had been known to STOMP! and they earned that reputation by playing sticky, sweaty, grimy,& gritty funk. But Slave's other classic funk albums should not be overlooked. I own The Hardness of the World, Just a Touch of Love, The Concept, Showtime , Visions of the Lite, Bad Enuff, New Plateau,Unchained At Last, Make Believe and Rebirth on LP- All of them are must-haves! But since most of Slave's output is unavailable on CD or out of print, buying this CD is worth the money!

I have the album version of this CD in my album collection and there is rarely a day that goes by when I don't Jam this on my Turntable. I am getting this on CD because I like to listen to it while driving or at work where I have a CD player. If you want to know what true pure funk is, then this recording is a must. As far as I am concerned, after over 25 years, Slide is still the funkiest song ever recorded (with all due respect to James Brown). Screw your wig on Tight is a brass driven Funk Fest. What is little known about Slave is that when they released their album SLAVE in 1977, 2 of their members were high school students. I also recommend their other releases. Hardness of the World and The Concept. Admittedly most of their other recordings are hard to find, but this album will certainly give you a great idea of what a real Funk band was supposed to sound like. I am giving it 5 stars only because I cant give it 105. Buy it, pop it in and enjoy it. You can thank me later.

My father bought this albume for me on my 7th birthday. I was blown away andplayed side one of the album religiously for about three months, and when I finally flipped the record over, I was blown away again. "Slide" is the cut everyone knows...and everyone SHOULD know it. This song is a piece of history. The first 10 seconds of this song is microcosm of what funk was all about: the groove (Mr. Mark's classic bass line), the wacky (the "dracula" laugh), and the UNIQUE (the bicycle horn). Straight up...this album is one of the funkiest of the 70s. Honestly, I think that at this point Mr. Mark--even though he was just a 15 year-old kid and it was his first album--was probably the nastiest bass player in the funk kingdom...nastier than Verdine, Larry, Louis, AND Mr. Mu-Tron himself (Bootsy). Mr. Mark didn't need any effects. Drac's guitar-playing is over the top as well. "Slide" is one of the few songs on black radio from that era that had rocked-out guitar solos that wasn't played Ernie Isley are any of the P-Funk guitarists. My favorites on the album are "Slide" (of course), "Party Hardy", and "You and Me" which was the first song on side two of the LP.

This is album is a funk classic. The band was raw and not as polished, but then funk was meant to be that way. If you've never listened to SLAVE, on this album they sound something like early-Pre-JT-Taylor Kool & the Gang's evil, agressive, and much more menacing twin. In any case, this one's a classic...if not for the funk then for one the best album covers of all time.
