That said, I found this book plodding and at times tough going. The victims in this story are newborns, and there can be no empathising with the victim, no backstory, no accounts from the victims' families for the reader to empathise with.
Mr. Phelps' has chosen to take a case which I personally think could have been explored in short story length and flesh it out to book length, much of it consisting of the killer's (at times fantastical) accounts of her life and the reasons for her crimes. The book feels like a few facts and court reports, fleshed out with two hundred pages of transparent lies.
Ultimately I felt a bit let down as the reader receives no real closure.
The section on the newspaper reporter was a strange addition I felt added nothing to the story, and felt tacked on to flesh the book out.
The author's contempt for the killer shows through in his writing and while I don't side with Ms. Odell, I still found it a bit jarring and hard to read.
If you are already a fan of Mr. Phelps' other books than by all means give this a go, but if you are new to this author I'd suggest starting with the excellent "Perfect Poison" or the extremely well written "Because You Loved Me".
