Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Harmel's modern-day fairy tale, her debut novel, takes a look at celebrity worship and women's magazines through the somewhat starstruck, somewhat skeptical eyes of self-described "nice girl" Claire Reilly, a 26-year-old entertainment editor at Mod magazine. After Claire catches her freeloading boyfriend, Tom, sleeping with another woman, she goes on an uncharacteristic bender, drowning her sorrows in tequila shots. At the bar, she runs into movie star Cole Brannon, whom she interviewed that morning for Mod. Cole kindly ministers to a weepy, drunken Claire and even follows her home to make sure Tom is gone. Cole is so perfect he's almost dull––and Claire's nemesis, beauty and fashion director Sidra DeSimon, is cartoonishly malicious, but Claire's frenzied narrative keeps the story interesting. Sidra leaks a rumor about Claire and Cole to the tabloids and fabricates a Mod article—with Claire's byline attached—about their alleged one-night-stand. But a red carpet confrontation sets Claire and Cole's reconciliation in motion, and the young editor has to weigh her job against the possibility of lasting love. Mod never had a chance. (Feb.)

I will not go into details about the contents of the book as I think they are already well documented but from page 1 this book was a page turner. Great storyline, so many moments when you can't stop yourself from laughing out loud. This book hits all the right moments and the ending is a blast. My only complaint is that it did not last longer because as I neared the end I really did not want to finish it as it was just that good. Recommend it and can't wait for this author's next book.

I found this book by walking down an aisle at my local library with my eyes closed and picking up the book my hand landed on. Okay, so I didn't find anything I wanted to check out until the fourth try, but this is what I ended up with so I don't think it's a totally terrible system!

As a girl who has fantasized about quite a few movie stars in my life, this book sounded perfect for me, and I was gladly swept away in Claire's romance. Toward the end I couldn't put it down at all. It's one of those books that by the time you get to the last build-up to the climax you can't even think of stopping, so it's a good thing if you don't have to work the next day. Cole Brannon is a totally dreamy romantic lead, which certainly helps, and while it is also one of those books where you know how it's going to end on page one, I find that really good chick-lit is in how you get there, and the middle of this book definitely had a few surprises that kept me really interested. While I always knew it was going to be a happy ending (with that cover, how could it not be?), there were times when I couldn't even begin to guess how it was going to turn around. I especially liked watching as Claire grew up and found a life she could really be content in.

My only complaint is that it was so painfully obvious to me (SPOILER, maybe?) that Cole was head-over-heels for Claire, and her constantly putting herself down and insisting that he couldn't possibly be was grating after a while and I began skipping entire paragraphs of her self-pitying. Otherwise, I thought she was a very realistic character, but it did get to the point where I was taken out of the story just by her complete obliviousness.

A very good book. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's ever dreamed of being swept away by a movie star!

Well written. Cute, clean. Enjoyed reading this cute story. Just proves it doesn’t have to be erotic to keep readers interested.

This was a good quick read but a little too predictable. It reminded me of the Devil Wears Prada meets How to Lose a guy in 10 Days mixed with fan-fiction.

When Claire Reilly, senior celebrity editor of Mod magazine, is given the assignment to write an article entitled "10 Reasons to Have a One-Night Stand" she thinks it will be the hardest thing she'll have to do. How is someone who can't even get her live-in boyfriend to make love to her for the last 29 days (and counting) supposed to be knowledgeable on such a subject?

A better person for the job would have been her co-worker and best friend, Wendy who was to sexual liberation what Manolo Blahnik was to shoes. A much easier assignment should be her next one...interviewing Cole Brannon the hottest male celebrity. Little does she know it will turn her life up side down.

In an amazingly short space of time, Claire's previously nearly-content existence is tossed into turmoil by her cheating (now ex-) boyfriend and her editor Sidra, the catty leader of Mod's fashion department "Triplets." Sidra has a hot jealous streak toward Claire's career success coming at such an early age. Of course she's also delusional and trying to convince everyone that she and George Clooney had "a thing."

And then there's Cole. His down-home boyish charm strikes an immediate chord in Claire that she's determined to ignore.

She's a professional after all and above getting involved with the celebrities she interviews. According to the tabloids and the mouth of his own publicist he's the closest thing to a modern-day Casanova.

Her opinions and emotional tug-of-war soon take a backseat when she finds her name splashed across the headlines as Cole's latest paramour. Claire is now fighting for her reputation, her livelihood, and possibly more as she finds what it's like to be on the receiving end of the media's rumor mill.

Kristin Harmel is no stranger to the worlds of magazine publishing or celebrity journalism. In her debut novel, How to Sleep with a Movie Star, she takes the knowledge she's garnered through her professional experiences and turns it into a fictional "what if?"

The dialogue and narration alike are sharp, witty, and oftentimes laugh-out-loud amusing. Characters provide three-dimensional entertainment, making them vary from easily relatable to wildly pathetic and even fun-to-hate. While the story is not a completely original one, Harmel gives it a lively and refreshing voice, making it stand out in the crowd.

This book was a great lazy summer beach read. It is definitely chick-lit, but I enjoyed reading it. Everyone whose ever dreamed of meeting their favorite movie star and having them fall in love with them, will enjoy this book. The book's characters have their ups and downs. All together it was a great read.

I loved how Claire and cole came to be. I liked how Claire never expected that someone like cole to fall for her. This story is almost like a modern day fairytale with a lot of humor thrown in.

Book arrived promptly. It's a good light read with a glass of wine or at the beach. The main character was easy to follow and I liked the character development. Would recommend this to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Gründe für einen One Night Stand..
Reviewed in Germany on June 27, 2011
..damit fing alles an.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bediente sich vieler Klischees ...

Great romance - movie star meets normal working girl and they eventually fall in love. The movie star might be just a teensy bit too nice here and there, but, oh well, who ever cares in a fairy tale, Bridget-Jones-like, fun read. I had some very nice hours reading this book.
