From the Back Cover

Held captive for decades
Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan knows what it's like to be haunted by the past. For years after her daughter Bonnie was stolen from her, she fought for closure. Now, as she strives to begin anew, she finds herself on another missing-persons case―one that is as mysterious as it is personal. A woman named Beth Avery, who has been locked away in a psychiatric facility for years, has vanished. And her connection to Eve is deeper than she can imagine.
Awakened by the truth
As long-buried secrets about Beth are uncovered, Eve begins to realize how their lives are entwined―and how Beth's disappearance puts her in grave danger. Desperate, Eve enlists the help of profiler Kendra Michaels, whose uncanny ability to detect clues and solve puzzles leads her to the truth: That Beth escaped from the hospital―and the mind-altering drugs that held her prisoner for so long―and is on the run. Soon, Eve begins to see the threads of a twisted plot within the powerful Avery family, one that threatens to destroy not only Beth but anyone else who might jeopardize the high-stakes game that is already in play. And time is running out…
"Johansen's knack for delivering robust action and commanding characters kicks into high gear."―Booklist

Iris Johansen is back with not only Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn, but also Dr. Kendra Michaels and Beth Avery. The book begins when Sandra, Eve's mother, confesses that she has a daughter whom she gave up for adoption. This half-sister of Eve's, Beth Avery, has gone missing from a mental hospital where she has been held prisoner since she was seventeen. This is vintage Johansen with secrets, suspense, evil, and non-stop action. I only wish that Dr. Kendra Michaels, Johansen's new protagonist introduced in CLOSE YOUR EYES, had been a bigger presence in this book. However, Beth Avery proves to be a strong, determined, independent woman, just like Eve and Kendra. I think that Johansen has a winning format in combining these three characters in future novels. I look forward to these!

Eve and Joe are once again thrown into a myriad of murder and mayhem when it's discovered that Eve's not her mother Sandra's only child. No the year before Eve was conceived Sandra had another daughter, Beth who's politically and prominent paternal family literally bought the child from the arms of 14 year old Sandra. Unbeknown to Eve Sandra has kept up with this child, from her childhood in European boarding schools, to her nearly fatal skiing accident and now to her disappearance from the mental hospital she's been in all the years since. Sandra wants Joe's help to find Beth and although Eve has mixed feelings about the discovery and Sandra's request, she and Joe go to find Beth. What they discover goes deep into the realm of criminal, psychopathic and even sociopathic behavior and the ultimate mastermind will shock everyone involved even the newly discovered sisters who's encounter has been halting and disquieting. and who's survival is questionable at the least.

Iris Johansen has entertained and terrified me for years with her Eve Duncan thrillers as well as her stand-a-lone and co-authored novels with her son Roy. She never disappoints me and in this one she shocks me to find yet another avenue for her protagonist Eve Duncan to travel when she throws an un-known sister into her plot. The storyline is as incredible as it is imaginative with twists and evil turns one after another as she speeds me along on her on her fast pace, nail-biting journey. Her tried and true characters are joined by an old friend from her last book co-authored with her son Roy along with new stars on each side of the morality fence. Even though this is not a romance novel the love scenes between Eve and Joe never cease to awe me in their intensity and honesty and above all their love for each other.

Once again Iris Johansen has created a story that grips you from page one! After Joe and Eve found Bonnie and her killer I wondered where she could take the series (secretly hoping for more Jane in the books)and the transition was perfect. The twist came early in the book so that drama was dealt with but the trials along the way to meet her goals were fun and exciting. The ending ensures many more stories involving Eve, Joe, Sandra and the surprise character. I don't want to gove it away, you must read this book!

I like "Eve Duncan" books. Well I DID. I can't believe the reviews I am reading. I was really disappointed reading this one. The characters and story were simply far too "over the top". The story line was simply unbelievable, as well as over simplistic. Beth's character (while not totally without merit or interest) was not believable. The "bad guy" (well the worst one of all, as there were many!) was ridiculously cartoonish. By the last page of the book, I simply sighed. Not terrible, but certainly a disappointment to me. Eve and Joe remained much as usual as if they had been dropped into a sadly amateurish book and were left to flail about and try to keep it all on an even keel...unsuccessfully I might add. Don't waste your money.

Like a lot of the reviewers, I have read all the Eve Duncan books and I don't remember the relationship between Eve and her mother being as bad as was portrayed in the opening chapters. They have had their issues but I always thought Sandra was supportive of and caring toward Eve. This story made her seem like an abusive mother who cared for the daughter she gave up than she did for Eve. Did I miss something?

I wish the author would soften Even up bit; she can be quite vocally rude to a lot of folks, even Joe. She is really rather unlikeable at times. I know she will always be injured by losing her daughter, but she was able to bring Bonnie home so I thought that would soften her bit. And why aren't Eve and Joe married? Seems odd to me.

After wading through the last couple of Eve Duncan books thinking they were steadily going downhill, this one has hit the bottom. The characters are ridiculous, the dialogue juvenile and the plot just plain bad. The author has inserted paragraphs here and there to give background or explain what is going on which only adds to the problem of having such a shallow plot. The characters spout some of the most inane drivel I have read in a long time. While I could suspend disbelief to go along with some of the paranormal communication in the earlier novels, it has reached a completely comical level here. Don't waste your time.
