I will definitely read the next one!
The author created some truly unique world building elements. They were fun to read about and add to the historic time period. I also enjoyed the characters. Our hero and heroine were an estranged married couple brought together to solve a mystery. They had a tragic back-story that I was eager to learn more about. I love second chance romances! Richard had some fun theories as they worked the case. They had some fantastic tension between them.
I didn’t realize it was part of series or only a novella when I began reading so I was disappointed that the romantic relationship between our estranged heroine and hero was not as wrapped up as I would have liked. I kept rooting for the couple to admit how much they loved each other and get back together. There was another important mystery that had yet to be solved.
That isn’t to say the book wasn’t satisfying as the case they were asked to solve was resolved. There were just a few tantalizing threads to make excited for the next book. I’m looking forward to the sequel!
I liked the story and the mystery. The one thing that made me drop my rating from a 5 to a 4.8 is that the word "preternatural" is used a lot which kind of bugged me for some reason. If that little thing doesn't bother you then this novella is a great read. I would definitely read another Dalton and Dalton mystery.
