Review

While perusing sleep books in the infant care section of my local Borders, holding a child who hadn't stopped crying for days. Nay! WEEKS! and stifling a yawn every twelve seconds, I realized that I didn't have the time nor inclination for a 500 page book on infant sleep. I quickly grabbed the shortest book I could find, checked that the author offered a level of credibility, and made my purchase. Boy was that the best decision I've ever made! My 6 month old went from waking 2-3 times nightly to nurse and cuddle to sleeping through the night with surprisingly very little crying within 48 hours. I was and am amazed at how much my daughter needed sleep, and just how sleep deprived she was prior to finding Sleep Tight. My child, who I had always just been told was demanding (family friend) or feisty, (our pediatrician). She suddenly wanted to be on the floor with toys for several minutes at a time instead of crying to be held. It was amazing what adequate sleep did for our little girl's disposition. Sleep Tight is a quick read with really helpful, quick tips. The book is laid out in an organized way, and the format is conducive to quickly referencing schedules and advice once one is implementing the plan. There are recommendations for bedtime routines, feeding schedules, and even lullabies for sleepy babies. Ms. Martyn was extremely helpful and quick to respond to our email when we had a little hiccup with the nap schedule. If you are absolutely against letting your child cry for a night or two, this probably isn't for you. However, Ms. Martyn offers some very nice examples of child rearing, boundary setting, and even discipline for older children and draws parallels to sleep and self-soothing as a skill necessary for children's success and maturation. I would recommend this book to any sleepy mom or dad who is ready to transition their child into a good night's sleep. --Amy Rogge

I have been cosleeping with my now 8 month old son up until last night. I have never been able to get him to sleep on his own for more than 20 minutes, after reading this book and following the sample schedule I am proud to say he had two naps and slept the night in his crib!! He did wake three times but was able to self sooth after a few minutes. I will be giving this book to my friends as a gift for sure. Great work!! --jk2011

I am a first time mom and didn't know what to do for my six month old who was still not sleeping through the night. After I searched and searched on the internet and asked many friends, who had children of their own, what I should do, I read one of my friends blogs on books she recommended and it listed the Sleep Tight; book by Suzy Martyn. I was so excited I found something that looked promising. (How can it not look good to a mom that hasn't slept through the night for months when it says Help your child attain a good night's sleep in three day; So I bought a book on Amazon and couldn't wait to get it and start reading! Well after I received the book, the first night (as the book says) was one of the longest nights of my mommy-hood, but the second night my daughter slept 12 hours! I couldn't believe it and it wasn't just her sleeping 12 hours, also when I laid her down she didn't even cry! She just rolled over and went to sleep on her own. She sleeps two two hour naps a day and 12-13 hours at night! I emailed the author just recently asking her about how to get back to where my daughter (who is now 15 months) would just lay down without crying because I took her pacifier away and for a week she has cried herself to sleep or I have had to sing her to sleep and within 30 minutes the author responded to me personally! So I did what she said and my daughter went to sleep without crying!!! I have and will continue to recommend and buy this book for any of my friends that have new babies or are having problems with their children sleeping! Don't hesitate to buy this book IT WORKS!!!! --Beckybirkey

I'm the mom of a 10-month-old and a 2 1/2 year old, so you'd think that I'd have this whole kid sleep thing figured out by now. Honestly, I haven't read many sleep books since my kids were born. We've sort of been winging it and hoping for the best. Lately that plan hasn't been working at all and my 10-month-old has developed some very bad sleep habits, so it was great timing for me to get to review Sleep Tight.

I was surprised by how much information was in this book, given its deceptively small size. The book is organized in a great, easy-to-follow manner, starting with four introductory chapters to prepare parents for fixing their kids' sleep problems (because honestly, we're the ones who need to be trained the most!), followed by tips for sleep routines for different ages and stages. I really appreciated this way of laying out the book- my kids are 10 months old and up, and since the chapters were clearly labeled, I didn't have to slog through lots of information on how to get newborns or babies 3-7 months to sleep- I could just go right to the appropriate chapter.

After the age-specific section, the next part of the book deals with handling sleep challenges and includes a great question and answer section with common issues that come up for sleep habits of kids at different ages. The book also contains an infant feeding sleep log, a very handy summary of sleep routines for different ages (birth-5 years) that breaks down number of daytime hours slept, number of naps, number of nighttime hours slept and number of meals. There are also indices at the back for sleep tips, charts, and question and answers, so you can quickly find the information you need.

After years of being a mother, I learned some things about helping babies and moms get a good night's sleep. I've always called the way I raised my children a "flexible routine." I disliked the term "schedule," (though, in reality, there is nothing wrong with the word or the concept) but I found the sleeping books that were available when I had little ones either too restrictive and hardline (no room for mama's wisdom) OR too permissive and lax (children always running the show). Somehow, by God's grace - I found middle ground - and with rare exceptions, our children slept well and were on great routines. I had to keep a routine for the good of everyone and I knew that a rested child was usually a pleasant child.

Well, I found this little book this year and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is struggling with little ones who are not sleeping well. I appreciate so much the fact that Suzy recognizes parents have wisdom to adjust and evaluate as they use the principles in this book.

I was on duty to watch my granddaughter for 8 days while my son and his wife went on vacation. Her mom wanted me to follow the plan outlined in this book but I was skeptical. My opinion was always that you should do what a baby wants and not try to control things too much. However I watched as my wife implemented the plan and saw the results. In my profession I've seen a lot of babies; those who cry during baths, diaper changes, and clothing changes. But, this baby was different. She was so easy-going and happy the whole day. She rarely cried and only when a toy or favorite snack was taken away. When she was put down for a nap she'd just roll around for a few seconds and then quietly fall asleep. Sometimes in the middle of her nap she would wake and just roll around quietly for a few minutes and then fall asleep again. At night she slept 12 solids hours. On occasion she would wake briefly but without our help she'd fall asleep again. One night I told my wife that if she woke I'd get her up and feed her at 3am because I thought that meant she was hungry. She never woke. I still can't believe that a baby so young can sleep for 12 hours without getting hungry.

I am a firm believer in the strategies and plans in Sleep Tight. I give my unreserved thumbs up and that is something that is very hard to come by. If your baby seems unhappy and cranky, they may just need more sleep. Your answers are in this book. I highly recommend it!

This book is the perfect gift for a busy "first-time Mom" who would like to sleep train an infant utilizing practical and realistic techniques. Suzy Martyn's book is written in a humble and positive tone. She provides sample timetables that are adaptable to your own infant's schedule and covers common troubleshooting issues (how to get a crying infant to calm down, etc). I was able to apply some of these techniques immediately. I read her book prior to delivery, as well about two weeks after childbirth. I found it extremely helpful both times, but particularly more so after I had some context in which I could apply the techniques. I recommend this book highly.
