- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2021Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified PurchaseI loved GTA5 but this is even better because of the martial arts aspect and of course a Hong Kong theme hits home with me. The fighting mechanics has a bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it (and also learn the fight patterns for each enemy) it is unbelievably fun and addicting. Honestly i wish there was a mode where you just fight an endless horde…maybe a survival mode where you go round after round on one life and the face meter never replenishes
The story line is great too. One of my favorite parts are the names. Dogeyes, Big Smile Lee, Broken Nose Jiang, Old Salty Crab, Pockmark, etc. Hilarious! The story itself reminds me a lot of the Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs (later refilmed in America as The Departed) as far as the undercover cop aspect. The voice acting is surprisingly good too but i mean…it should be since you have some pretty big names in the game like Will Yun Lee, Kelly Hu, James Hong, Lucy Liu, Emma Stone, Yunjin Kim, Edison Chen, just to make a few.
Give this game a try especially if you like martial arts or if you can appreciate some Hong Kong culture. You won’t be disappointed
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified PurchaseThis is a game so great that I ended up buying it for both Xbox One & PlayStation 4, which is something that I never do. This game has everything from entertaining cut scenes, fast-paced action, high-octane driving, interesting items found while exploring the map on foot such as treasure chests, animal statues, and upgrades. The story was also good and it was easy to feel a connection with the characters, especially protagonist Wei Shen. From story missions to optional missions, there is enough content here to keep you occupied for days on end. The replay value is also high despite there only being one ending. The remastered version for PS4 features better visuals as well as a greater appreciation for the seamless transitions from cutscenes to action with no loading time in between. If you are a fan of Grand Theft Auto games, third-person sandbox shooters/action-adventure games as well as Hong Kong cinema, then you will enjoy this game.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2023Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified PurchaseAs a gamer who loves 3rd person RPG open world action games I had a lot of fun playing this title. Interesting story, could be better for sure with the fighting game style. Fair easy game if you go for the platinum as well.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2017Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified PurchaseGreat 3rd person GTA style game. It definitely highlights the martial arts aspect over guns, but I liked that aspect too. Though I do love to blow stuff up as well. If you've played it's predecessor's, you'll like this game. The first two were True Crime Street's Of LA, and True Crime New York. This one supposed to be the third in the True Crime series, but the original company got shut down or bought out. So another developer came in and picked it up to finish it off. It's still a great game though.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2014Platform For Display: PlayStation 4Verified PurchaseI bought the Playstation 3 version of Sleeping Dogs when it first came out and was very impressed. I compared it as a mix of Grand Theft Auto 4 and the Yakuza series when I did my original review (see my PS3 review for what I thought of it when it first came out). It's still that but now with graphics reworked to be more HD (Unfortunately, locked at 30 fps). Every part of me was thinking that this wasn't going to be worth the $60 but I ended up pre-ordering it anyways because I had a blast with the PS3 version. I'm somewhat glad I ended up giving this optimized version a shot.
Whether or not it is worth the $60 to you is really up to you, if you really enjoyed the original Sleeping Dogs, this is going to be the closest thing to Sleeping Dogs 2 for awhile (the new free to play Sleeping Dogs: Triad Wars is a free to play game coming out for the PC rather than a new console game, so I'm not really counting that as Sleeping Dogs 2). If you didn't play the original Sleeping Dogs, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this game to try it out if you like the Grand Theft Auto series or the Yakuza series' fighting mechanics. I really liked the story as well so I didn't mind playing it again. I also didn't mind shelling out another $60 because I didn't purchase the extra downloadable content for the PS3 version and this one comes with it all. Also, playing this on my Playstation 4 controller is way better than playing it on my Playstation 3 controller..., the design on the PS3 controller was an ergonomic nightmare. Short story is, if you've bought the previous generation of this game, don't expect a brand new game for this $60.
As this is pretty much a direct port, it's all the same goodness from the original version. The all-star cast (Will Yun Lee, Lucy Liu, Emma Stone, Edison Chen, Yunjin Kim to name a few) is of course present and the story is all the same. With that being said, as I said earlier, I didn't hesitate to pre-order this when the announcement came out that this game was being ported over to Playstation 4, even though I played through the story the first time on the Playstation 3.
If you are brand new to the Sleeping Dogs series, here's part of my original PS3 review detailing the gameplay and a very brief summary of the story. Once again this is pretty much a direct port, so really nothing is different.
"Simply put so I don't spoil anything, the story consists of you being an undercover cop named Wei Shen in Hong Kong trying to gain the trust of the Sun On Yee Triads to eventually take them down.
The gameplay is awesome. The open world consists of many things to do ranging from illegal street races to occasional dating to karaoke with English songs and a couple of other things (personally wish they threw in some mahjong but we can't have everything!). The world is quite lively, filled with mostly Cantonese speaking people. They tend to swear in Cantonese a lot which is fine with me, I personally think it lends to a little authenticity but the things they say get generic once you hear it a couple thousand times but it is still entertaining nonetheless! You'll notice how lively this game is the second you walk into the very active night market (think the Woman Street's night market in real life Hong Kong), in which you can interact with vendors to buy clothes and food. Throughout the game, you're also littered with favors you can do to build "face" (when translated from English to Cantonese, it is your reputation). With more face, you're able to buy more clothes and different cars that more suit your face level. Around town there are health shrines to find to help you increase your health and day/night food stalls to help you restore health. Combat in this game is quite fluid, you attack with a variety of punches and kicks while also able to counter enemy attacks (enemies glow red when they are about to strike) and counterattack. Weapons are also littered throughout the game. You're able to use most of the environment as a weapon, whether it be slamming the enemies into walls or throwing your enemy's face into a fan that is switched on. In short, you have a lot of options to dispatch your enemies. You'll have to play the game to really see how fluid the combat is!"
Pros:
- A direct port of that Sleeping Dogs goodness, but in an "optimized" visual form!
- Being a direct port, all of the great game play and story is still here
- Comes with the 24 DLC add-ons from the previous generation of Sleeping Dogs versions.
- One of the DLC extends the main storyline, so if you didn't get enough of the story of Wei Shen, here's more.
Cons:
- $60 is a bit steep for a direct port
- Frame rate drops occasionally but it personally didn't bother me that much (take note, I've only had this game for a couple of hours, so I'm not sure if it gets worse later on in the game, it's very similar to the choppiness I had in the PS3 version). This is a bit disappointing considering it's supposed to be an optimized next generation version of the game.
- "Optimized" is a bit of a stretch, for a previous generation game ported to a next generation console, this remastered version looks more or less the same. (I've heard the PC version is much better though)

This game is DEFINITELY adult so don't even think about getting it for anyone under the age of 30.
But seriously, this is rated R for sure. The violence can get over the top as well as the explicit references to sexual activities. There has been more than one occasion whereby I felt some tinge of nebulous guilt for having heard some of the dialogue in the game, akin to like, happening to land on some X-rated website and happening to linger there for more than a minute. Be warned!
Interesting sort of side note: for some strange reason you can at some point in the game acquire a GSP outfit for the protagonist that you control. GSP is what 'people in the know' lovingly call undisputed Canadian MMA legend Georges St. Pierre.
