Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for the Bobby Dollar series:

"Delicious, crunchy, Hellish fun.... Bobby’s odyssey makes for a compelling, page-turning experience, chock-full of visceral sights and sensory overload." —Tor.com

“A noir fantasy series with a dark and thrilling story of Heaven and Hell battling for human souls. Exhilarating action, fascinating characters, and high stakes will leave the reader both satisfied and eager for the next installment.” —Publisher's Weekly

“When I heard that Tad Williams was writing an urban fantasy novel, I got all tingly. Now I’ve read it, and it’s even better than I’d dared to hope. It’s snarky, fast-paced, and above all, original. You should be tingly, too.” —Patrick Rothfuss, #1 NYT bestselling author of The Wise Man's Fear

"Fans of hard-living angel Bobby Dollar will no doubt mourn the end of this outlandishly imaginative series, but not before they savor another unpredictable and enjoyable adventure from Heaven’s most unconventional angel." —RT Reviews

About the Author

Tad Williams is a California-based fantasy superstar.  His genre-creating (and genre-busting) books have sold tens of millions worldwide.  His considerable output of epic fantasy and epic science fiction series, fantastical stories of all kinds, urban fantasy novels, comics, scripts, etc., have strongly influenced a generation of writers.  Tad always has several secret projects on the go. 2016 will see the debut of a number of them; March 2017 brings The Witchwood Crown, the first volume in the long-awaited return to the world of the Memory, Sorrow & Thorn novels. Tad and his family live in the Santa Cruz mountains in a suitably strange and beautiful house.

.
I'll cut to the chase:

1. If you loved the first book, you'll love this one too. It's pretty similar, which is to say, NOT like the middle book in the series. (The middle book is by far the most thought-provoking of the three, but less entertaining for exactly that reason.**)

2. Yes, it's a conclusion to the cycle. The ending implies there will be a new cycle someday, but most of the threads previously introduced are tied up nicely.

I don't have much more to add, since I don't care for spoilers. Suffice to say, I stayed up all night because I couldn't put the darn thing down. I'm paying the price at work today, but it was well worth it.

Thank you, Tad Williams!

** Here is my review of the middle book, in case you wonder what I meant above. Read that and then read my own comment to this review regarding my only disappointment with the ending to this third book.

Similar to LOST and Sopranos....the ride was great; awesome even, but the finale was a bit of a let down.

Still. The majority of the book was exciting as we follow Bobby Dollar's roller coaster ride to the end. A truly unique and believable setting with memorable characters!

The bad news--it's so much fun to read it was gone in two very late nights. The good news: there's enough wiggle room left at the end of the book I'm hope Tad Williams writes another one in a couple of years. The book itself has characters we loved or hated in the earlier books and some new ones that are wonderful. Loved the Amazons. Best part? Unlike reading the second book that takes place mostly in hell, you won't feel like taking a shower after every chapter.

Ever since I picked up a copy of "The Dragon Bone Chair" I have been a HUGE fan of Tad Williams. And any time he's had a new book (like the "Otherland" or "ShadowMarch" Series, or "The War of the Flowers") I've dove in and always came away from them with a feeling of utter wonder at his talent.

But,.....I found this book somewhat disappointing. The action and plot line were "OK" but at the end of the book there are still many questions left unanswered. Since this was the third in the series I expected this book to give us some closure on the whole "Third Way" issue. And the story line looked it was headed that way. However, all it did was partially address those open issues and leave me with a feeling of unresolved expectations.

Since the reader is left hanging I assume that there will be a forth book after this one. Hopefully that is indeed the case and we'll get some closure on the various plot issues.

There are only so many times you can give the powers that rule heaven and hell the finger and get away with it…
Who am I kidding? As Bobby Dollar discovers, there’s always a consequence to your actions, and just because you’re one of heaven’s most infamous mavericks doesn’t mean you’ll be immune to the significance of cold hard justice when it catches up with you.
In “Sleeping Late of Judgment Day”, we find Bobby bouncing from one calamity to the next and inching ever closer to discovering the identity of those responsible for making his angelic life a misery as they foment rebellion. But all is not as it first appears, and once Bobby has peered down the rabbit hole, he finds his world becoming far more complicated than he’d ever imagined it could be.
But who to trust in this helter-skelter ride?
Find out for yourself in this most excellent conclusion to a great first outing for Bobby Dollar.

Okay--I've been waiting for months, but the wait was SO worth it! Tad Williams is back with my boy, Bobby Dollar, in the third installment of this crazy, dark, sometimes painfully hilarious series: Sleeping Late on Judgement Day. Who doesn't love a really bad angel?

Holy crap! Bobby's in trouble, but when is he not? This angel is always looking for grief, and he always finds it. Nothing is what he thinks it is, and even Bobby's jaded eyes are opened as the reality of his unreality unfolds.

Bobby's inquisitive nature has rattled the cage of someone important in the Heavenly scheme of things, and that someone wants Bobby destroyed. They have already gone to great lengths to do so, and now he's going to find out just who it is, and what it has to do with this mysterious Third Way between Heaven and Hell. All his friends and most of his enemies are back in this tale, and some of his enemies prove to be more likable than his friends.

He knows who is behind his troubles, and he is up against overwhelming odds. As Bobby says in one of my favorite lines from this book, "You know your life is pretty screwed up when even the winos turn their backs on you." That comment pretty much sums up the magnitude of his trouble.

There is an innocence and kind of naivety about Bobby Dollar, despite his unsavory occupation. He makes mistakes, and draws attention to himself, and yet he continues to ferret out the truth behind the traitors in Heaven's midst. The bad guys and the dangerous beasts are really bad, and the good guys are just swimming as fast as they can in shark-infested waters. There's always something lurking around every corner, just waiting to trip Bobby up.
