The real story is an exploration of the mind of seriously screwed up but on the surface functunal young male with crippling emotional issues revolving around trust and emotional abandonment eventually figuring out how to heal despite making every possible horrible choice possible. He is, to put it bluntly, what my husband refers to as a "slut puppy" who uses alcoholic behavior and sexual encounters as a band-aid for his own emotional immaturity and damage.
I suspect this should be required reading for every young adult of both sexes, if for no other reason than to reinforce birth control measures and to have an understanding of just how screwed up people are.
The medical part of this is really a byblow. The compelling part was witnessing the growth of the hero as he begins to realize that his black and white condemnations of human behavior are simplistic (especially considering his own actions) and emotional growth.
I happen to be of Czech heritage and my husband with huge emotional issues about his biological mother who died when he was little more than a baby, so this story really resonated with me. We did not find one another until our late thirties, but now I am glad to say we will be in it forever. He also made horrible choices, but now we both have a lifemate for life. Sometimes you have to go through hell to purge the ghastly stuff from your soul.
Read it. Seriously.
I have been reading free books for years and seldom been inclined to purchase a second book. The few times I have it was only to be let down. While the first book might have been complete in itself it seemed the second never lived up to the first. So what did you do? You offer a slew of books, or the first half, to lure the unwary into your masterful trap.
I tried to avoid it by reading only the first part of each in succession and avoiding the concluding book. Amazingly it was the one book that took me the longest to get into (ok, not really THAT long) that sprung the trap. “Sleeping Truth” is not even something that I would normally read anyhow but your plan had worked perfectly. I’m not out that much money but I soon will be.
Curse your writing style Ian.
The way you interweave complex characters and stories within stories like intertwined roller-coasters, moving toward the predictable events only to have them snatched away by yet another delectable surprise twist designed by a cunning and devious master storyteller. Like the comatose Sal my heart was racing more than once, and if the truth be known, racing like hers in that hospital bed due to the words she heard from you. And more than once I was Andrew cursing the hand that fate had dealt him.
So of course while reading your books I have managed to ignore the wife, dogs and cats more than I ever should. Now the 30 year marriage is tanking, the dogs growl at me, and the cat even sprayed me in contempt. I haven’t seen my grandson in two weeks …
What was the cost of this writing skill sir? Was it worth it to you? Is this some mad plan to subvert mankind and take over the world?
Curse your writing prowess that snags the unwary.
Of course I will post this review on parts 1 and 2 to inform potential readers about your devious plot.
There were some really weird typos: the type that would happen if the text was read into a computer and the audio recognition software misheard the word. It could have been easily picked up by a good editorial review.
I am nit engaged enough by the storyline to want to read the next book.
Top international reviews
However to my dissapointment this book is absolute drivel. I rarely give up on a book however bad but in this case by about 45% through book 1 I gave up, Skimmed through a few chapters to 50% in case anything happened and then gave up in dispair.
The main character is totally pathetic (not in a sad way but in a boring way) and inspires no interest in what happens to him. Nothing happens, every step is so predictable.and yes I did get to the point of the london bomb but by then I'd also lost the will. I'm not against a story with little action and deep emotions but if so it needs a far better writer than this.
Sorry. I'll give one more of his books a try before assuming the first I read was a fluke
OMG so many twists and turns poor, Andrew is carrying a lot of weight on them young shoulders ,
He has Guy the roommate
He has Sam Guys girlfriend
He has Gail the "Friend"
He also has Dianne ( works bike ) lol
But now he has Slouvka
With Sal in Hospital and so many questions that need answers ...will Andrew be able to move on from these questions or will be give in and ask them ????
I'm gonna have to read book two to find out grrrr
Great story !!
It is described as a romantic medical thriller but there is little romance, little of the medical and certainly no thrills.
I don't know why I read it to the end; optimism maybe, a hope that it would improve. It certainly didn't inspire me to read the second part and I doubt that I will bother with any more of Irvine`s books either.
further forward in the story than when I started. A man who cant get over 1 failed relationship is not the basis for a whole book. The only
medical bit was his best friends girlfriend being in a coma. You have to read the 2nd book to get the answers to the first. I didn't bother.
Pleasantly surprised to say that I have not only thoroughly enjoyed this story but reflect on the book frequently several days after I have finished the story. This has taught me a bit about myself I think! Maybe there's more to me than just a thriller reader after all!
There are good characters in the book and Andrew, the main character, appears to have a lot going on. He is a deep thinker and a lonely man but is very likeable. He has a dilemma which is really the main storyline, what is he going to do and will it be the right decision?
I'm off to find out!!
After going back to it and starting to read from the beginning again I was hooked and what a story!
So well written and wow brilliant story!!!
To take in, Andrew, moved to london, after his world is shattered when Kate his girlfriend has an affair, so staying with his best mate Guy, he finds out what london is all about
