The special 5th Anniversary Edition of SLIMED!

An
Entertainment Weekly “Best Tell-All” Book
One of Parade Magazine's Best Books About Movies/TV
Included in Publishers Weekly's Top Ten Social Science Books

Before the recent reboots, reunions, and renaissance of classic Nickelodeon nostalgia swept through the popular imagination, there was
SLIMED!, the book that started it all. With hundreds of exclusive interviews and have-to-read-‘em-to-believe-‘em stories you won't find anywhere else, SLIMED! is the first-ever full chronicle of classic Nick…told by those who made it all happen!

Nickelodeon nostalgia has become a cottage industry unto itself: countless podcasts, blogs, documentaries, social media communities, conventions, and beyond. But a little less than a decade ago, the best a dyed-in-the-wool Nick Kid could hope for when it came to coverage of the so-called Golden Age (1983–1995) of the Nickelodeon network was the infrequent listicle, op-ed, or even rarer interview with an actual old-school Nick denizen.

Pop culture historian Mathew Klickstein changed all of that when he forged ahead to track down and interview more than 250 classic Nick VIP’s to at long last piece together the full wacky story of how Nickelodeon became “the Only Network for You!”

Celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Nickelodeon with this special edition of SLIMED! that includes a new introduction by Nick Arcade’s Phil Moore in addition to a foreword by Double Dare’s Marc Summers and an afterword by none other than Artie, the Strongest Man in the World himself (aka Toby Huss).

After you get SLIMED!, you’ll never look at Nickelodeon the same way again.

“Mathew Klickstein might be the geek guru of the 21st century.”—Mark Mothersbaugh

Editorial Reviews

Review

"While this is a book you can fit in your purse, and while the cover is a happy mixture of the classic Nickelodeon lime green and bright orange, it's filled with a lot more than nostalgia ... And while SLIMED! is certainly fun, especially for readers who grew up watching these shows, it also provides a serious lesson on the birth of cable television."
--
Kirkus Reviews

"
SLIMED! explores the behind-the-scenes drama of controversial shows like Ren & Stimpy and the family lives of its child stars, but it also reveals the network's unconventional programming and knack for recruiting up-and-coming talent (Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins was on the writing staff for Clarissa Explains It All)--as well as the secret ingredients to the network's famous green slime."
--
The Atlantic, Fall Books Preview

"Culture isn't all serious business--sometimes it's just good fun."
--
Publisher's Weekly, Top 10 Social Sciences pick

"Reading
SLIMED! is like taking a trip back to summer camp to see your old friends. Mathew Klickstein has captured the outrageous, inventive, and crazy times of early Nickelodeon, and the stories are sweeter than a mug of bug juice. A nation of Nick fans will salute his shorts."
--Steve Slavkin, creator of
Salute Your Shorts

"Somewhere between a tribute, a belated yearbook, and an autopsy,
SLIMED! attempts to figure out--with the help of nearly 200 performers, writers, producers, and execs who worked at the network between 1985 and 2000--how a fledgling channel with virtually no original programming identified, captured, and entertained the hell out of its preteen demographic.... SLIMED! is the best kind of blast from the past: dishy, unwholesome, and thought-provoking enough to make you question your own memories."
--
The Village Voice

"Klickstein provides a bracing oral history of Nickelodeon in the 1990s, the era of shows like
Ren & Stimpy and Clarissa Explains It All."
--
Entertainment Weekly, Top Four Tell-All Books Of Year

"Mathew Klickstein’s oral history
SLIMED!… does a wonderful job of reliving those times through interviews, photos, and assorted behind-the-scenes details. The book truly defines the joy one felt to be a 'Nick kid' and brings a heaping dose of nostalgia along with it."
--
Parade Magazine, Top 25 Books About Movies/TV

"The book is quite impressive. Mathew Klickstein must have a large multi Gigabyte RAM in his head to remember all those quotes and sort them into a meaningful book. Or at least he must be very well organized. Well done."
--Roger Price, creator of
You Can't Do That on Television and green slime

"Mathew Klickstein has written what is quite possibly the first serious pop culture book of our generation."
--
The Loafer

"It's the inside story of the popular kids' channel and is full of fun anecdotes and interesting facts about the network (it coined the word 'tween'), its cast and crew members, plus the aforementioned slime recipe."
--The Hollywood Reporter

"SLIMED! digs deep into the depths of Nickelodeon's 'Golden Age' with interviews and fun facts."
--Huffington Post

"To anyone being raised in the 90s, whether as a kid or teenager, the new book
SLIMED! An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age is an excellent nostalgia trip."
--Bi**h Magazine

"SLIMED! An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age, by Mathew Klickstein, is an in-depth oral history that includes the genesis of the channel's brand and many of its iconic shows."
--OK! Magazine

90's Nostalgia at its Finest
I got this book as soon as it came out and loved it. I plan to read it again soon. Only down side is I had to google many of the producers, directors, creators and even some of the actors, so I then made a cheat sheet that I used as a bookmark. I highly recommend this book to anybody who grew up on 90's Nickelodeon. I love the way it's set up. It's like talking to old friends.

When I first heard that a book about the "golden age" of Nickelodeon was being written I was immediately excited. Not only did I obsess over Nickelodeon as a child, but it was a movement that every kid had to watch because it related to every race, gender, and mindset of kids around the world. Late last year is when I found out about the book and since then I have been a huge support. I "liked" the Facebook page for the book and just been fascinated with all the short teases of transcripts of the interviews and small second video clips. Maybe I was so excited is because this could mean the glorious place that was Nickelodeon Studios Florida would be included in the book but sadly it is only referenced a small amount but that's okay because the book is fantastic! My copy arrived Tuesday and I have already finished reading it(something I don't do often)!

What I would say why the book is great is because it immediately goes right into action of what every actor, host, creator, director, producer, network people, and TV executives from Nick's heyday thought about their experience. The way author Mathew Klickstein just jotted down the interviews it almost makes you think you knew the question he was asking them but you don't. You almost wouldn't call him the author because really the only actual thing he wrote was the acknowledgments chapter(thank you notes) while the whole thing is just the person's name and their answers in the six chapters. It's almost like you were in the room with them talking but more than that what stuck out is how everyone's answers is what we all were thinking when watching a show on Nick but also giving us a peek of what we were not thinking. When I was reading it I was intrigued of how one answer plays off from another answer and they sound related while going into the next subject of the interviewee which makes it candid. What would surprise you the most is the story behind Ren & Stimpy which is REALLY good, the physical demands of every child actor from Nick back then, and how most viewed being seen on a kid's network. "Slimed: An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age" talks not only about the shows but about how a whole network that's main focus was entertainment for children became a phenomenon. When reading it you often wish that Nickelodeon(which has totally changed now) would go back to the magic that they used to have but don't see that ever happening so you just have this to cherish your childhood but yet learn how the magic was formulated into our lives. This is a book for those who are nostalgic about being a kid yet learning the good times, hard times, how a tv show was ran, friendships, and impact that all these people behind Nickelodeon had to face. I really hope there's a part 2 because I can tell some stuff was let out and maybe there's some more we don't know about. Mr. Klickstein is a great guy and author and he should do more of this. Overall "Slimed" is a fun-filled knowledgeable book that gives you a glimpse behind why Nickelodeon was Nickelodeon for that certain era and yes you should go buy it!:)

Being nostalgic for the days of youth and maybe one or two of the old Nickelodeon shows is one thing, but to really enjoy this, you should probably be one of those people who browses Youtube for old Nickelodeon ads at 4 in the morning. As someone who is deeply indebted to old Nickelodeon (both in my humor and worldview -- the content they pushed out mid 80s to mid 90s has forever changed me), this book is super engrossing.

For people like us -- of which there might not be a lot, but really, who knows -- the book's somewhat rambling nature (and inability to explain who anyone is) is not only accepted but enjoyable. It feels like a very in depth conversation at a party, except these people are executives, actors, directors, writers, crew members, etc from a certain cable network at a certain point in time.

Thankfully, there is a "Cast of Characters" at the end of the book, so you can flip there anytime and scan for the name you don't recognize (of which there will probably be a lot -- I don't exactly know every writer on "You Can't Do That On Television," for instance). It's a bit annoying at times, but the experience as a whole is very enlightening and informative.

This book is a fantastic peek into the early days of Nickelodeon. Stories about the beginnings of You Can't Do That on Television and Double Date abound. The interviews with alumni from the early shows are funny and insightful. However, if you are a person who came of age in the 90s and quit watching TV for kids, the sections on shows like The Adventures of Pete and Pete will lose you. The beginning of the book, like the beginning of the network, were of the most interest to me. I skipped whole sections later in the book, when I didn't know nor care about the show being detailed. Still, I'm glad I got to read what I did, and glad that overall, the experience for the young actors on my favorite show was a positive one

There is no flow to this book. It's a series of quotes from different people involved at Nickelodeon, and they often change topics without any sort of warning. There can be a series of quotes about Hey Dude!, and then that is followed up by quotes about You Can't Do That on Television, followed by Ren and Stimpy. Where is the logic in the presentation?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book I Would Recommend To Every 90s Nickelodeon Fan In History
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2013
If there was ever a network in the 1980s and 1990s that was truly groundbreaking and changed the face of kids television, that channel would be called: Nickelodeon.
Having been a 90s Nickelodeon nostalgia fan for quite some time now, I knew I was in for a treat and that treat has paid me back kindly. Author Mathew Klickstein (Who I have spoken to a few times prior to reviewing and purchasing the book) goes through great lengths to give his fellow readers what they truly wanted to know about, even going as far as to review the very people behind the curtain, the cast and crew, voice actors/voice actresses and writers of the old school Nickelodeon shows we have come to know and love.

The "Behind The Scenes" facts in this book is not only astounding, but very informative and I can't help but feel a bigger appreciation for these shows than I did before. From learning about the behind the scenes of Ren and Stimpy (Already covered in Thad Komorowski's "Sick Little Monkeys", but some things not covered in that book are seen in "Slimed") to learning about how Brenda Mason felt about adding laugh tracks in "You Can't Do That On Television".

What sticks out for me is the behind the scenes footage of the original 3 Nicktoons. I won't give out too much but we find out how Doug came to be and how the man behind Doug felt working at Nickelodeon, in addition to Jim's opinion on Disney's Doug (Which may please some fans of the show) and John Kricfalusi's relationship with Nickelodeon from Ren and Stimpy being the channel's biggest hit to John and the studio being fired (The reasons I will not say here to avoid spoilers) from the channel and being a huge fan of Ren and Stimpy, it was fascinating to read the opinions from people who worked on the show in the book. The Rugrats section may shock people as not many people know this story, but (One of the creators of Rugrats) according to many writers on the first 3 seasons, had an issue with the writing staff for writing in certain jokes and lines into scripts, because she didn't want her children at the time to be influenced in the wrong way. While not as bad as Ren and Stimpy, this story (covered in The New Yorker back in 1998 but this gives out some more information) is still shocking and sad to say the least.

Also includes quotes from Vanessa Coffey, Geraldine Laybourne (The woman behind the Nickelodeon that so many fans love), Marc Summers, Toby Huss and many more. This book is to quote Stewie from Family Guy: a "thumping good read" and gives insight as to why people came to know and love Nickelodeon and I couldn't agree more as to their opinion of Nickelodeon today. I myself personally prefer Gerry Laybourne's Nickelodeon due to the creativity and mix of syndicated and original shows (You won't find Looney Tunes on Nickelodeon nowadays), though I enjoyed a few shows from the Herb Scannell era (1996-2005).

Mathew did a fantastic job and I definitely recommend it to every 90s Nickelodeon fan out there and even if you didn't grow up on these shows, these quotes are a great history lesson to how the phenomenal network. Here's hoping that he or someone else covers the next chapter in Nickelodeon's history. This book deserves the praise it's getting.
