The story setting is Alaska and Newfoundland and plays out over a roughly 20-year time span. Preston Darling from a young age has been fascinated by seals. As the years roll by, he follows that passion to become a marine biologist to study his favorite animal. On a research trip to Alaska, he meets Vivienne Dillard (Vivi) who, with her father and other family members, spend all their time protecting a herd of seals far to the north. Preston learns she is a selkie, a kind of shape shifter who can operate both as a seal and a human being. Preston is captivated by Vivi's silver hair and dark eyes but is shocked to discover Vivi had met him in her seal form many years prior, recognized him as her "twin flame" and initiated a mate bonding with him.
The magic of their relationship once Pres adjusts to the situation is threatened by a jealous, dark wizard, Erinus, who has already made a "claim" on her to become his wife and mate and will brook no opposition. Pres and Vivi marry anyway and have children, but Erinus throws all kinds of dangerous, magical hurdles at them, ultimately cursing Vivi to be unable to shift back to her human form. While Preston raises them alone, she is relegated to watching her children grow up nearby from the ocean waters where she now must live. Once a year, the husband and wife are able to meet for a week at the Hotel to keep their relationship alive, but after six years of such paltry visits, the grinding reality of their situation is becoming intolerable for both of them. Something has to be done to end Erinus' hold over them.
The pace picks up considerably as decisions and actions are taken that leave the reader breathless. The author has done a superb job of giving her characters authenticity, courage and depth. Though the settings and premises are exotic, the archetypal challenges facing this family are completely familiar and often heartbreaking. The book also has a minimum of editing errors, though once again, use of the subjunctive is inconsistent. A great read and highly recommended.
I liked the story and the way it was presented (shifting between the present and the past), it has a fresh view on the shifters world, selkies are not your tipical romance shifter in terms of how their magic works. More of a family story than your tipical romance, in terms of plot or the way (timeline?) the story was told. But don't worry, you see falling in love, dificult times and separation, and of course HEA for our hero and heroine. And selikes! Love them!
My main problem, and the main reason I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars: nonconsistent use of magic for some characters throughout the book. For example, you have a major conflict situation (fighting or whatever) with all main characters in it, and it turns out that one of them doesn't use magic at all, but just this time. Any other time that character is smashing magic left and right. It felt like the writer didn't know how to do a proper resolve of the situation and just took the easiest, but in terms of story very lousy, way out.
This is the first book of J Rose Alexander's that I have read. She has created a wonderful paranormal world full of compelling characters in Slip the Waves. The story takes place mostly in Newfoundland over a 20-year period. Preston becomes fascinated with seals while on a family vacation as a boy. A beautiful, young silver seal "chooses" him during that time. As a grown man, his love influences his career as he becomes a marine biologist to study his beloved seals. On a research trip to Alaska, he meets Vivi, a selkie, a seal/human shape shifter. Vivi is the seal from his boyhood trip. Their bond is renewed, they are bonded, and start a family.
Their love is sweet, but their story is full of heartache thanks to a jealous wizard and his curse. You can't help but get caught up with the difficulties that they face as a family. They went through so much to stay together, the pain of separation, and watching each other from afar. Loved their children! There is plenty of suspense; the book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I felt like it was a bit rushed at times. Maybe it would have worked better as a longer book or even as two books. Still it was a good read.
Prescott has always loved seals since he was a kid and grows up to become a marine biologist. When he's 14 he gets bonded to one silver seal in particular.
As a adult during a drunk night in Alaska he bumps into Vivi and is immediately warned off of her being told she's already been claimed only he has no intention of listening and follows her out of the bar only to find out not only is Vivi a shape shifter seal/human she's also the seal he got bonded with as a child. Even though Vivi is spoken for against her will her and Prescott get married and have kids only to have Erinus make it impossible for them to be together.
Theres a lot of twists in this book about why Vivi & Prescott can't be together and what they finally decide to do about. Prescott refuses to move on from Vivi knowing exactly where she is but, not being able to tell his family him and Vivi devise a plan.
