A quick read into the liberal bias in the media during the 2008 presidential campaign

'A Slobbering Love Affair' is a short account of media bias for the Democratic party and the Obama campaign during the 2008 presidential election. However, Goldberg does end his book with an honest qualifier that I think is worth noting. When you look back at the election, the media did not win it for Obama. Several factors led to McCain's loss including the economic recession, the fatigue of war, his lackluster campaign, etc. But that is beside the point. Media bias is media bias.

One of my favorite parts of the book was Goldberg's quoting of Charles Krauthammer on the issue of Bill Ayers. When asked about his relationship with Ayers, Obama responded "I was eight years old when Ayers was planting bombs." It was Krauthammer who asked the questions the mainstream media never did. Krauthammer said "Would you maintain friendly relations with an unrepentant terrorist? Would you even shake his hand? To ask why Obama does is perfectly legitimate and perfectly relevant to understanding what manner of man he is." Well said Charles.

Very readable book. Everyone should read this book. So many people voted for Obama because it was time for a black President. They didn't take the time to learn that he had no leadership experience, no knowledge of the Military, and was brought up as a militant Socialist.

Goldberg's thesis is a statement of the obvious, but it is good to have the various moments that had all of us screaming at our TVs cataloged. Nicely done.
Needs references and footnotes; if the paper-back or hard-bound had these, they were not conveyed into the Kindle version.

The Appendix of the book has a title page, but the body of the Appendix was omitted in the Kindle version; an egregious omission by Amazon and/or others who digitized the book.

Goldberg says nothing new when his points out MSNBC for their slobbering over a candidate, rather than reporting;
But the other new outlets, and so-called news coverage is spot-on.

The only slobbering event Goldberg did not include - which was perhaps the most egregious - was coverage by every news channel of Obama's speech on why he was reneging on his promise to McCain to abide by campaign spending limits. Imagine a Republican trying to take back a promise to a Democrat.
This "speech" was not a one-on-one with a 60 minutes reporter "sweating and vetting the candidate"; it was a campaign-headquarters orchestrated media event. Oddly Goldberg makes no mention of this absolute nadir of so-called journalism in 200 years of politics and journalism; it was a manifest abdication of the media's unique roll in our Democracy and in our Constitution

This moment of slobbering bias ranked right up there with Bill-Hillary Clinton's post Super Bowl "interview" on 60 Minutes when Hillary gave her 'stand by your man' comment in regards to Bill Clinton's philandering, Jennifer Flowers' testimony, and Arkansas State Trooper accounts, etc.

Still, the book is well worth the kindle price for Bernard's humor alone.

More Entertaining Than Anticipated

News flash. The left-leaning, mainstream media was in the tank for Barack Obama during the historic 2008 Presidential election.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

And thus, when former CBS veteran/current political pundit Bernard Goldberg came out with his media critique, A SLOBBERING LOVE AFFAIR, I thought his book would be an exercise in rhetorical redundancy. The major newspapers and the networks, along with CNN and MSNBC, are comprised of journalists who are decidedly and unabashedly liberal. Unless someone is brain dead--or in complete and utter denial--it's a foregone conclusion to one and all that the mainstream media were nothing more than cheerleaders for the Obama campaign. So why write a book stating the obvious?

So with a twinge of "whatever" I picked up this thin volume with the huge title and began to read Goldberg's witty and engaging style. Before long, he was enthralling me with little tidbits of media bias I had forgotten about; case in point: the April 2008 debate between Obama and Hillary, when ABC commentator George Stephanopoulos dared to leave the liberal reservation and ask The One about his past associations with terrorist Bill Ayers. And outlets like The New York Times subsequently went nuts--not so much at Stephanopoulos, but at Sean Hannity and FOX News.

That's right, folks. You can't make this stuff up.

So with witty and clever anecdotes, quotes, analysis, and interviews, Goldberg gives the reader a trip down Memory Lane that was the 2008 election. It's a fast and entertaining read, but I knock one star off this review because of all the mistakes and typos. (Pretty obvious Regnery was in a hurry to get this book out.) I wanted to wait a while until November 2008 was in the rearview mirror before reading A SLOBBERING LOVE AFFAIR: THE TRUE (AND PATHETIC) STORY OF THE TORRID ROMANCE BETWEEN BARACK OBAMA AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA. And I'm darn glad I did, and thank Goldberg profusely for all the chuckles.

Two things struck me as I read this book.

First, Goldberg is actually quite funny. He deserves to be widely read. If only most media criticism was as witty and as topical. There is simply no comparison between an engaging and topical book like this, and most of the dreck that you will read in a typical journalism studies course.

Second, Goldberg is quite polished. The book is short. And the points are succinct and easy to understand and read.

Overall, if you want a first look at the strong case for media bias in the 2008 Presidential Election, then you must start with this book, regardless of your perspective.

Well written and fun, I think it is very much worth reading.
