A woman watches her marriage implode over text message and decides that ignorance is not bliss in this bitterly satisfying short mystery by the New York Times bestselling author of Lady in the Lake.
Liz Kelsey promised herself she’d never again spy on her feckless husband, Phil. But then she discovers a string of suggestive texts on his secret burner phone. Even worse, he’s flirting with the woman who shook their unstable marriage once before. But knowledge is power. What’s more dangerous—what Liz knows or what Phil doesn’t know?
Laura Lippman’s Slow Burner is part of Hush, a collection of six stories, ranging from political mysteries to psychological thrillers, in which deception can be a matter of life and death. Each piece can be read or listened to in one truly chilling sitting.

Although this is the third book in a series that revolves around lies, deceptions, and betrayals (and in this case all three) none of the stories are at all connected and each completely stands alone. Finally I found one in this "Hush" collection that I actually liked too...
SLOW BURNER is a unique story in that we see everything through the eyes of the wife (Liz) whose husband (Phil) is lusting after a young business associate of his. Just about half the story are texts between he and this other woman we only know as HW. I will admit I didn't understand how Liz could tolerate nor hold her tongue about her husband's perfidy. I so wanted her to get her own burner phone and fake a relationship with a younger, hotter man, just to see how he enjoyed a taste of his own bitter medicine.
That did not happen though and while I found something suspicious near the end that pretty much helped me figure out what was going to follow, I wasn't completely correct either. There were a couple of twists the author threw in that I'm nearly positive made my mouth hang open for a few seconds, it was just so unexpected. In the end I found this to be a shocking little mystery that was surprisingly good. Justice wasn't exactly served and someone paid a high price for their sins, but it was a satisfying story overall.
NOTE: I simultaneously read this on kindle while listening to the audible version and I thought the narrator (Amy McFadden) did a really stellar job. It took me a total of 54 minutes to complete which was maybe ten or so minutes more than if I'd read it on my own, but It definitely enhanced my reading experience 😊
Pages & Kindle Locations: The story ended at 99% on page 32 and location 451.

Liz refuses to confront Phil directly since she gave her word that she would never again spy on him. Of course, that was before she found this burner phone. But Liz understands Phil better than he understands himself and this, she knows, puts the power in her hands. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Slow Burner is part of the Amazon Hush Collection, a "collection of six stories, ranging from political mysteries to psychological thrillers, in which deception can be a matter of life and death.” Each piece is very short and can be read independently or together.
The plot centers on Liz's knowledge of of her husband's emotional attachment to another woman, one of his company's vendors. The awkward tensions build as Liz starts reading the texts on her husband's burner phone to the other woman. Wow! What dies she do with her superpowered knowledge. Liz is also teaches Greek literature, emphasizing in the misdeeds of the Greek gods.
The author's storytelling combines the ironies and absurdities of the Greek gods with Liz's surreal lived experiences, creating an imaginative and interesting storyline you won't want to put down. Loved the ending!
The Audible narration was a nice plus for this short work, complementing my Kindle purchase.
This was the third installment of Amazon's Hush collection of strong author writing unique short stories about the secrets people live or die with. I'm loving the whole series with it's high quality and variety.
