Slow Cooker 101 is filled with good advice. Some of it is extremely basic. Things like stocking your kitchen with the proper utensils, etc. Then there was advice that was so simple, yet so helpful I had one of those “now, why didn’t I think of that?” moments. For example, the author suggests creating tin foil handles prior to cooking roasts and poultry in order to facilitate removal later. I admit I haven’t tried this tip yet, and I do have to wonder how well it works on a super moist, falling apart roast or chicken but I’m willing to give it a try.
There are plenty of recipes in this book to appeal to a variety of tastes. Even the kids should enjoy the super simple Sloppy Joes and Cheeseburger Joes recipes. Apparently there’s even a way to make Polenta in your slow cooker (who knew?!) Definitely something I’m planning to try.
There are entrees, stews, sauces, dips, puddings, and meats designed to be used for sandwiches, so the recipes are suitable for lunches, casual family suppers and elegant sit-down dinners. As with almost all recipes, there is a certain amount of prep time beforehand, but this can easily be done the night before. Some of the recipes need a little further finishing up afterwards – things like making gravies from broth, shredding meats, preparing rice as accompaniments and blending to make purees– but the bulk of the recipes can be used by busy families throughout the week.
I would have liked more accompanying photos, but it didn’t take away from the value of the book. This is a good book to have in your cookbook collection.
101 Great Recipes is a great slow cooker cookbook. From its Introduction which helps those who are just finding their way around the kitchen, to all the delicious, well seasoned slow cooker recipes which work for all of us!
Commonly found recipes like: Beef Stew, BBQ Pork, Chicken Curry, and Paella, are side by side with Indonesian Chicken, Cioppino, and Irish Lamb Stew.
I liked the international flavors represented in this cookbook, and the colorful photos interspersed throughout the book were a mouth-watering addition.
Each recipe is clearly outlined (generally on one page) with Ingredients, Serving Size, and Directions.
Some recipes do have a lot of ingredients, and some require prep like chopping fresh herbs prior to putting them into the slow cooker, but nothing about this cookbook is what I would consider 'advanced'.
Variations are offered on some recipes like the BBQ Brisket variations which offer up two other recipes that can be made from the basic one. Simple instructions on how to tweak the recipe are given, as well as serving suggestions. Very helpful!
I also liked that these recipes are not geared for a large serving sizes. Most recipes in the book are for 4-6 servings; ideal for most families, but can be doubled if you want more servings.
There's a great deal of attention paid to seasoning each dish in this cookbook. A wonderful surprise! Adding things like sweet pickle spears to Sloppy Joe's to give them a fresh flavor, really caught my attention.
Anyone with an adventurous spirit and no time to cook, will appreciate these delicious recipes. You can 'Wow!' your family and friends with recipes from this cookbook and spend virtually no time doing it.
TIP: Prep your slow cooker the night before when you have time to chop up ingredients. Not only does that help you in the morning when you're setting and forgetting it, but it allows the flavors from all those great herbs and spices to marry, making your dish that much more flavorful.
I have 3 slow cookers in varying sizes and I've used them for the standard items such as Corn Beef with Cabbage, potato's and carrots and certain cuts of roasts, etc...I like to use my slow cooker(s) for a lot of reasons - The meat comes out so tender, the flavors are infused with which ever herbs and/or spices that are called for in the recipe, knowing that dinner is already done before breakfast has even started and the aroma that fills the house throughout the day. As an RN working 12 hours shifts, I really learned to appreciate the art of slow cooking but never really found a recipe book that was easy to follow yet had fantastic recipes until Slow Cooker 101.
Slow Cooker 101 gave me a lot of really great recipes that were easy to prepare but seemed like I slaved over them (TeeHee - I never correct anyone either :o] )
The really cool thing is that in the beginning of the book it goes through the basics such as all the different herbs, seasonings and flavorings along with common cooking terms, general cooking tips and a basic ingredient list for slow cooking.
With Slow Cooker 101 I found so many unique yet simple recipes that my family loved. The recipes were easy to follow, as were the instructions. There are recipes in Slow Cooker 101 that will be passed down through the generations in my family.
Some of our favorites are Braised Short Ribs, Pork, Artichoke and White Bean Stew and Indonesian Chicken with Zucchini and that's just to name a few.
Oh, I don't want to forget the Ultimate Mac 'n' Cheese!
