It"s also more than a little unrealistic to have all the male characters described as runway model handsome. The other thing that gets a big markdown is the fact that one of the MC's is supposed to have a gym body but never works out. The other MC does jog a couple of miles, once and only once. The author states that one of the MC's tells the other guy that he got his money's worth with the time spent on his personal trainer, and then drops the topic for both of them. BIG MISTAKE. If these guys really do workout, they will compare their gyms and weight routines, NOT internally obsess (and not share) their angsty "feelings" and insecurities (I guarantee it). A good author can use their fitness routines as metaphor or analogy for their emotional relationship. Hopefully she can nail this down in her next book because she seems to be heading in that direction.
What she does right is her other characters and how she usually shows their strengths and weaknesses thru dialogue and action. The author really fell down when she started with the whole angsty, boring internal monologue of " does he love me, am I good enough" crap. I loved Karen but she could be more forceful and still be believeable. The author also was pretty good at laying off of the British slang. The few times she does use it, she puts it in easily discernable context. (Tuck in to sort out the taking piss, you know?)
There are plenty of typo, grammar, and punctuation errors to remind you that it's an ebook, but not so many as to be really aggravating. She will also have over a page of dialogue and not identify who is speaking; unacceptable.
Three stars seems to be a reasonable rating for this effort. Good effort but not great.
The mystery had equal time with the romantic pairing between two old lovers, and the sex/romantic moments moved the plot along (not gratuitous, thank goodness). I also really enjoyed some of the creepier moments, when our MC was being stalked late at night. The story was very steady, no rushed situations (even when we find out who the killer is, I didn't get the feeling of "rushing the end"), and no lulls where I felt like I need to put the book down because it was boring me. The atmosphere and writing was perfect!!
The romance was a slow burn, the characters had some history to get over so it all made sense, and there was some angst near the end that they had to get past. In the end, there is a HFN and solution to the mystery. We are not left hanging! Everything worked out and I love the fact that we have a teaser that this will be a part of a series.
Can't wait for the next one, I enjoyed it that much!! I'm signing up with this author so I can keep an eye out.
It's a murder mystery set in a small town in England. Michael, a forensic psychologist, comes home to bury his father but the discovery that his father was murdered changes everything.
Nathan is the police officer in charge of investigating the crime and he and Nathan have a past.
The investigation into the murders - yes I did say murders - is at the forefront in this story. The rekindling of a love affair is there but is not the focus. This will develop as the series unfolds.
The story is good and I liked the writing style.
I've put myself onto the author's mailing list so I don't miss out on the next book which is, hopefully, not too far away.
