Games run very well and look great, even better than what I was expecting.
Tight controls. The games control very well, not missing out from the console version.
The portability makes it that much sweeter, being able to play these gems anywhere.
Sly 3 must be downloaded via voucher... disappointing, yes, but I already knew that going in. So I hope you have a descent size memory card. The pic here on amazon says "required memory 2mb", but when you actually recieve the game the cover will say "required memory 2.9gb" for sly 3 of course, a bit shady there.
Audio compression. Doesn't sound as good as the originals, but that's to be expexted. I recommend just using headphones.
Overall, great ports! Very well done.
Performance: First off, I will say it immediately! There are very rarely any framerate issues that destroy your experience with this collection. It's that good! I did find the menus were slightly slower at times for navigation, but it isn't bad at all. It's mostly smooth!
Visual presentation: I found the games to be between PS2, and PS3 quality. What I mean by that is, the textures are less edgy, and blurry than the PS2 versions. The games look fantastic! They are more edgy than the PS3 ports, but they look great! One minor issue here, are the cutscenes. While they didn't bother me on the PS3 version, on the Vita, I see it is more edgy, and don't seem to be optimized in any way for the Vita. They are still enjoyable to watch though.
Sound quality: I played through all three ports, and I found that the audio is clear enough to hear everything going on. It doesn't sound like terrible echoes, or buzzy like a walkie-talkie (exception of in-game chat from intercom) Although, the sound is rather quieter in some areas, and louder in others. As an example, you hear Bentley speaking loud and clear, but Sly's whispers can only be heard at louder volumes, even with game audio at its max. Everything can be heard somewhat well at 60% for Vita volume, or higher. I recommend headphones to hear those quieter sounds a lot better. The game still sounds great at a higher volume level without headphones though.
Controls: Now we know the Vita has less controls than a dualshock, so how well do the Sly games control on Vita? I'll tell you.Read more ›
First of all, you should be aware that only Sly 1 and 2 are actually on the cartridge. Sly 3 must be downloaded, so make sure you have space on your memory card for it. I think it's about 1.3 GB.
For the most part it's a good port. Framerate is smooth most of the time, though it will occasionally drop a bit when there's a lot going on, though it never becomes unplayable or anything.
For Sly veterans, you may be wondering what they did about the L2, R2, L3, and R3 buttons.
For L2 and R2, the answer is that they simply don't exist. Whereas on the PS2/3, you could have 3 powers at once, mapped to the L1, L2, and R2 buttons, on this version you can only have one power at a time mapped to the L1 button. It's annoying, but ultimately it does the job.
R3 has been mapped to the touchscreen. It's a bit unwieldy, but luckily you usually don't need the binocucom on a moment's notice, so ultimately it's fine.
L3 has been mapped to the rear touchpad, which works well.
While it's not a perfect port, its still quite good and I think any Sly fan will be happy with it.
