not-funny-enough

Quirky? Oh yeah. Funny? Often. Enjoy indie movies? Uh-huh. Sympathetic main character? Uhh. Our mentally broken "hero" murders for an unknown reason, then proceeds to brutally demolish the body throughout the movie, then wins our hearts in the end, escaping the terrible U.S., entering the heaven that is Switzerland - oh joy <fist-pump>. It's sad to face the fact that our country appears to find this morally flawed not-funny-enough flick deserving of such praise. If its an art-film, then me bad - this pompous jazz is wasted on me. If you gave more than 2 stars, look in the mirror and repeat, "numb nut".

p.s., the swiss alps are damn nice, I admit.

I read the novel this film was based upon, back when it was a gift from the author, a family friend. I found myself mentally casting actors to play the amazingly quirky but identifiable characters. A great amount of time passed before "Small Apartments" found its way into the hands of a director who "got it".

I have to say that it is difficult, for me, not to compare this work to that of Tarantino, if only for the raw emotional concept, quirky behaviors and "street view" filming process. However, the combination of Millis (who wrote both the novel and the screenplay) and Akerlund (the director) bring the dark side of everyday humanity into perfect view without glorifying the gore and violence so many filmmakers succumb to. The violence is acceptable, even necessary, as are the few sexual scenes that lend credence to the story and personalities that make up this labor of love. Tarantino's got absolutely nothing on these guys!

The cast is, well... correct! I can't imagine anyone other than the "heavyweights" who breathe life into characters like Franklin Franklin (Matt Lucas), Burt Walnut (Billy Crystal) and Tommy Balls (Johnny Knoxville) but it doesn't stop there. You've got the talent of James Caan, Amanda Plummer, Juno Temple, Dolph Lundgren and veritable unknown, Scott Sheldon, who makes his few moments as Officer Smith a lasting impression. The casting list is mighty and recognizable, but these folks were drawn to the characters created by Millis and the vision of Akerlund, rather than a paycheck.

There is a story, one that compels us to realize how little we understand one another in this all too short existence on the planet and lays bare our preconceptions and misconceptions of who we see and how we react and assign personal judgement. You don't need to be a "deep thinker" to get this film and that's the beauty of it.

The old saying that "money can't buy happiness" is true and untrue... both are addressed in Small Apartments, however, it brings home the very real point that true happiness lives in our mind, however small or large!

I was both eager and apprehensive about finally watching this film, especially knowing the author, screenplay writer and executive producer (Chris Millis) on a personal level... I'm so glad I gave in to eager! Bravo! This is a must see!

So much more that a quirky comedy

I put it on expecting a dark, quirky comedy and got that and much more. This movie has depth. It rises way above dark, quirky comedy and at its weird little core is a treatise on the human condition, on hope, despair and forgiveness. For me it recalls the films of David Lynch and John Waters but is more grounded and prosaic than either of those two very unique film makers. But like I said, I got a lot more than I expected.

: ) Dark comedy, just the right shade.

This show has quite a few well-known acters in it despite the fact it seems more like a weird B movie which would attract big stars. Many time when I see a famous acter lowering him/her self to this, I think there must be issues that require some easy cash. However, this movie even though it has a very simple plot and could have turned out to be a sad, depresing misteke, turned out to be twisted and surprisingly funny. It's very dark and looks at the life lived by people who are not "living the dream", but only living" Just getting by. Not homeless, ......... yet. Not people we typically care to watch, talk to, or even know about. But is you think about it, the really interesting stories are mostly about people like these. Making unrealistic, crazy decisions that sometimes make you shake your head and wonder. Much more interesting than the bubble butts with plastic faces cable TV thinks we should watch.

marvelously creative and offbeat

about as offbeat and quirk as you can get. won't go into all the fun characters and incidents - suffice it to say there are many. and it starts with the very opening scene: a guy in only tighty-whiteys blowing a humongous swiss horn in his apartment. the comically weird characters just go on and on, and you have to admire the writers for coming up with all of these. had me laughing half the time, and marveling at the inanity the rest of the time.

A small, quirky film chock full of big, studio stars

The trailer makes this look like a dark comedy. It undersells the darkness. There are plenty of comedic moments, wherein the comedy is mostly found within absurdity. There are also LOTS of serious, dramatic, sad, depressing, and poignant moments. This is very much an art film, even if it does have tons of faces you'll recognize. It's also one of those films that, for me, ends up being one you really, really like but can't quite put your finger on why. I highly recommend this movie.

just browsing through prime movies looking for something to fall asleep to, something light-hearted, nothing loud and nothing I have to analyze. Saw Billy Crystal's face in the thumbnail along with Rebel Wilson and immediately thought that this should be mind-numbing enough to put me to sleep, I mean it has Rebel Wilson on the cover. And, even though I did fall asleep right around after Franklin gets beat up - when I woke up the next morning I immediately smoked some GG#4 and started the movie over from the beginning and watched it all the way through.
The casting is as zany as the movie itself! Rosie Perez, Billy Crystal, Donald J Qualls, Johnny Knoxville, James Caan, and Rebel Wilson? This cast would be awesome to see really living together like it was a season of VH1's Surreal Life. Small Apartments is a fun watch and a good one to name drop if you're ever in a conversation about quirky, zany movies that make you feel like a real cinefile.
