Steve McQueen’s monumental five-film counterhistory of London’s West Indian community—now on home video
Mangrove
Lovers Rock
Red, White and Blue
Alex Wheatle
Education
Product Description
With the five films that make up his Small Axe anthology (Mangrove; Lovers Rock; Red, White and Blue; Alex Wheatle; and Education), director Steve McQueen offers a richly evocative panorama of West Indian life in London from the 1960s through the ’80s—a time defined for the community by the terror of police violence, the empowering awakening of political consciousness, and the ecstatic escape of a vibrant reggae scene. Ranging in tone from the tenderly impressionistic to the devastatingly clear-eyed, these powerfully performed portraits of Black resistance, joy, creativity, and collective action—all sumptuously shot by Shabier Kirchner—form a revolutionary counterhistory of mid-twentieth-century Britain at a transformational moment.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2022These are great little stories about the Caribbean experience in the U.K. Got this as a gift for my father. A lot of his siblings went to England after the 2nd World War to help rebuild and stayed there and built a life for themselves. Highly recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023Look, every one of these movies is better than 95% of the "based on a true story" dramas out here. The actors all give great performances, but Shaun Parkes and John Boyega especially are stellar, and "Mangrove" and "Red, White and Blue" are the best episodes IMO. The ending of "Red, White and Blue", these last lines, wrecked me like few movies ever did.
The cinematography and the photography are perfect, the production is luscious but also not polished to the point of feeling artificial (like "Judas and the black Messiah" was). The stories have masterful emotional buildups, and great rhythm. And Steve McQueen trusts you, the spectator, to fill the empty spaces, the pauses, the silent shots. These movies don't feel the need to explain or show everything, to highlight the "message".
And the soundtrack! The soundtrack! It is so good!
The "Uprising" documentary also does everything a good documentary should do: no commentary, no voice over, no invasive text. Just let the people talk, tell their story. It also made me look back on the "Lover's Rock" episode with a very different perspective.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2021I really wanted to see Small Axe, but since I don't have the equipment in my home to do live streams via a tv, I bought the DVD instead. The 5 films are outstanding: the acting is great, and the content really draws you in and makes you think. The morals/messages are powerful and profound, transmitted through the actors and the circumstances they find themselves in. As you watch each film, you learn about a different aspect of the Caribbean experience in England (the so-called Windrush generation). As a fourth-generation descendent of Europeans immigrants residing in the US, I found it enlightening and educational. Small axe fall big tree! Highly recommended, and the seller is also great (Rarewaves in the UK).

Dr KingReviewed in France on December 12, 20243.0 out of 5 stars (très) inabouti.

Steve McQueen is one of the most visible contemporary artists working on questions of colonisation/decolonisation, power struggles, domination, racism and alterity. Small Axe concentrates on the Jamaican community in Britain during the 70s onwards. His highlighting of the injustices entailed by the community are necessary for the understanding of British culture. Asking the question « What is British ? ». « « « Mangrove 9 » is similar to « Twelve Angry Men » by the great film director Sidney Lumet or the more recent « The Trial of the Chicago Seven » by Aaron Sorkin in which the cards of prejudice, racism and the colonial dominating mindset are laid on the table. « Mangrove 9 » is a game-changer employing humour and facts to bring about an understanding on a level of profundity. Steve McQueen uses real time filming as a way to access deep emotions, slowing down and laying bare what is it means to be a minority, dominated by the ignorant and the powerful. Dialogue and communication reveal sensitive issues to enable a point of view to open up with an idea of spreading light on what up till now has been obscured.

Great series that more people should see. It delves into a lot of sociopolitical, cultural, and historical topics woven into the narratives. Each episode stands on its own and well worth the watch!
