i've been making mai tais lately, and have tried the bg reynolds, the 1883 routin, and the small hands. the reynolds is very thick and syrupy, dark, but not strongly almond flavored. it has some almond flavor, but it is very subtle. the 1883 goes the other way- thinner, very strongly almond flavored but smelling and tasting like almond extract. the 1883 ok, useable, as is the b.g. reynolds, but i think my search for the perfect orgeat has not ended. i just tried the small hands product and think it's the best so far- more almond flavor than the reynolds, less artificial than the routin.

a month or two later: try 50/50 the routin and the small hands. the routin adds some intensity to the relatively mild small hands product.

This orgeat is thicker and nuttier than most orgeats, which usually taste like almond extract dowsed in syrup. It's the best I've tasted, free from harsh artificial tastes. Its flavors are also more subtle, especially the almond component. Some tasters may prefer an orgeat with a more forward flavor, but was fine for me.

The 2 most important flavors and scents you want from orgeat - almond and orange - are so understated in this product that the flavor is lost in my tiki drinks. I'm having to use double the amount for very little payoff, which makes it prohibitively expensive, certainly not worth the price. Small Hands makes superb grenadine, but their orgeat is not in the same league.

This is a VERY different syrup than any other orgeat I have ever tasted. Despite the oft-repeated claim that it is one of the very best brands, I cannot agree. The primary flavor (and odor) is of bitter orange blossom water (a key ingredient in orgeat but in VERY small amounts). The overall taste is almost insipid and overwhelming and frankly, almost chemical. Still, I tried making Mai Tais with it and found, again to my disappointment, that the sickening-sweet taste overwhelmed the drink.

I am certainly willing concede that in matters as arcane as the composition of French apothecary waters, tastes vary widely and it may be that most people will find this orgeat to be supreme. But before you buy it, you should smell and taste bitter orange blossom water. To me, it has the character of a cleaning product--very intense and odd. The same can be said of Small Hands Orgeat Syrup.

As an orgeat fanatic -- well, really, a Mai Tai fanatic -- I've wanted to try this product for quite a long time. Unfortunately, shipping was prohibitive until recently. Now it's available everywhere, so I've finally gotten my hands on a bottle...

First thing I did was shake the hell out of it. It was completely separated, which is kind of a minus. I wouldn't mind a tiny bit of xanthan or something added to the mix to stabilize things.

Next I tried it straight. Absolutely delicious. Clean, natural, lightly roasted almond flavor. A bit of sourness, which seems odd in an orgeat, and is due to the lemon juice added to the mix. I presume this is in there to help avoid bacterial issues -- citric acid is anti-bacterial. Weird, but if anything it only added to the nice flavor.

Currently in my cabinet is a bottle of Routin 1883 orgeat (with orange flower water added), which is my favorite of the commercial versions. Straight up, it tastes insanely cloying and artificial next to the Small Hand orgeat. Like comparing a raspberry lollipop with a raspberry.

Next step, of course, a visit to Mai Tai City. I made two identical drinks: 1oz lime juice, 1/2oz orgeat, 1/2oz Bauchant curacao, 1oz Smith and Cross, 1oz Barbancourt 15.

And now we get to the reason for the 3 star rating:

Small Hand Mai Tai: Pucker up because this drink is over-the-top *TART*. That bit of sourness I noticed earlier really came through, and not in a good way. I had to stir in a barspoon of simple to balance things. After that the drink was, well, drinkable. But where is the almond flavor? All of that roasty goodness simply vanished. It wasn't there on the palate, it wasn't there on the finish.

Routin 1883: Balanced, slightly creamy, delicious.

Nearly flavorless but the "flavor" it did have was distinctly stale and soapy. Yet one more hideously expensive, pretentious "artisanal' product that doesn't deliver. Not even close. Save lots of money and avoid this one.
UPDATE: Putting my money where my mouth is I made my own orgeat using the recipe from the book Shake, Stir, Pour-Fresh Homegrown Cocktails: Make Syrups, Mixers, Infused Spirits, and Bitters with Farm-Fresh Ingredients-50 Original Recipes.
Wow! What a revelation! Hugely flavorful and easy to make. Making my own showed me what a rip-off Small Hands is. For less than $10 in ingredients (that's a very liberal estimate) and a couple of hours of effort on a weekend I was able to make over 1 liter of the best quality orgeat available. Plenty for me and plenty left over to give away as gifts to other cocktail-loving friends.
