Best hay for people with grass or hay allergies!

I've been buying hay from Small Pet Select for the past 5 years. Their hay is always fresh and extremely good quality. My rabbits absolutely love it! I had been buying Timothy hay for the past 5 years but I suddenly developed a severe allergy to the hay this year. I broke out in hives whenever I fed my buns and was sneezing constantly, had trouble breathing, and had extremely itchy, watery eyes. My husband also has asthma and he couldn't even go in the rabbit's room without some reaction (even though I vacuumed and cleaned constantly). I couldn't take it anymore and was worried that I would have to move my rabbits to the basement. After doing research, I decided to try Orchard grass hay. Let me tell you...INSTANT relief!! No reaction to this hay at all. And the best part? My rabbits LOVE this hay! They eat almost every piece and there is minimal waste. They also have better poop with this hay because of the high fiber content. Best decision I ever made and I can now snuggle my fur babies without any unpleasant symptoms. Obviously everyone has different allergies, but if you are suffering from a timothy hay allergy, I strongly recommended trying this hay. It saved my relationship with my buns!

Fantastic Hay, fantastic company - Dusty

I thought this hay was perfect in everyway except it was really dusty. I grew up on a horse farm and I have a degree in agriculture so I know quality hay when I see it. The hay is very high quality. It looks like it was harvested correctly and there were no weeds and unwanted matter in the hay. The box I received had a very generous amount. However, my batch was incredible dusty. It makes little clouds when I retrieve some from my box. It's not at all moldy, that looks and smells different, it's just dust. It reminds me of the hay bales that you find on the bottom of haystacks that have collected all of the other bale's dust. We air it out in batches outside or else it wouldn't be usable for my particular Guinea pigs. (One has a serious allergy to environmental pollutants including dust.)

I've revised my listing from three stars to five. I ordered a 50lb box of Orchard grass. When it arrived, I noticed that there were "pricker weeds" in with the Orchard grass. This presents a real threat to my Guinea pigs as cuts in the mouth can easily get infected. (We lost a beloved piggy this way.) I contacted Small Pet Select and they sent an new 50lb box free of charge, I'm really happy with the product and the company.

Rodent wrangler really recommends

Generally alfalfa hay makes a much nicer cup of tea. As I still had alfalfa hay leftover, I found it difficult to finish this 50# box before rodents in my house found it & polished it right off. I concluded that they like this hay - or at least they like it well enough to chew through all 50#.

Mind you, they didn’t just eat all 50# once; I saw them eat this hay twice! I know it sounds crazy but I watched several eat this hay for dinner & then turn right back around (literally) minutes later and gobble it up a second time. Seriously, I don’t care how good the cooking is, there is nothing I like well enough to eat it twice.

The only things that seems to be missing from this hay are mites. Prior to switching to this hay, I’d purchased a couple of bales of feed hay locally from a couple of different farms. It mite (!) be coincidence, but both times within a week of starting a bale there was itching, hair loss, anxiety, civil disobedience, and eventually open rebellion. I'm on my third box of this hay & so far no open rebellion, just a few protests about my unwillingness to pay for bell peppers out of season.

I plan to keep buying this hay. It’s so soft, and green enough to tell that it’s fresh. And really, if it’s clean enough to prevent bald, scratchy mutiny, & tasty enough for guinea pigs to eat it twice, then it doesn’t matter what I think about the tea.

1. This orchard grass didn't arrive in the type of box shown in the picture, it was just in a regular cardboard box with their logo and hand cut outs. The hay was poking out of the handles because it wasn't in a bag or anything at all to keep it fresh. I'm kind of concerned about giving hay to my guinea pigs that could have been touched by anyone and has been directly exposed to who knows what in the warehouse it sat in for who knows how long. At least putting it in a bag seems like it would be better than nothing.

2. The hay doesn't look awful, but it's definitely not as fresh as the 10lb box I ordered last time (which arrived well packaged like the image shown). I switched from Timothy hay because my guineas are super picky and I couldn't find a consistently decent brand of Timothy hay and was wasting money on stuff they wouldn't eat. I thought orchard grass would be better as I've never seen a bad batch of it.

I'm going back to the last brand of orchard grass I bought because my guineas aren't going to eat this. I tried giving them some from the bottom of the box and they'll lay on it, but aren't eating it. I'm not sure how in the world I'm going to return a 20lb box of hay, but I'm going to try. If I'm not able to return it, I guess this will be money wasted and a lesson learned.

The hay comes in a really nice box without any plastic wrapping, allowing us to cut a neat hole on top to get the hay out easier with less mess.

The hay itself is of good quality, with long strands & a fresh smell. We have 2 rabbits, one of which is very fussy about their food. Small Pet Select is loved by both and they go through the box really quickly.

Delivery was very prompt, especially with prime! I would recommend Small Pet Select to any rabbit owner.
