Shuly Xóchitl Cawood is the author of the award-winning poetry collection, TROUBLE CAN BE SO BEAUTIFUL AT THE BEGINNING (Mercer University Press, 2021); the short story collection, A SMALL THING TO WANT (Press 53, 2020); the memoir, THE GOING AND GOODBYE (Platypus Press, 2017); and the little advice book, 52 THINGS I WISH I COULD HAVE TOLD MYSELF WHEN I WAS 17 (Cimarron Books, 2018).

She has an MFA from Queens University, and her creative writing has been published in The New York Times,The Sun, and Brevity, among others. Her most recent awards were the 2019 Adrienne Bond Award for Poetry and the 2021 Independent Publisher Bronze Medal for Short Fiction. Shuly also teaches writing workshops.

Stunning Debut Story Collection, Each One a Gem...

Reading this gorgeous collections of short stories, I’m fascinated by how you create a compact yet complex, nuanced, lovely and complete gem. Each story stands up. A view into individuals, relationships, and the situations they find themselves in unfolds like origami. The author is a kind of a magician.

The smallest most tender details contained in her stories make these characters come alive. remembering how many ways you can crack a heart open. And how pain can be written with so much tenderness. It’s hard to part ways with these characters even with the crisp and satisfying ending of each story.

I’ve thought about what makes these stories so compelling. I think that it’s the knowledge of possibilities open enough so that I’m left thinking not just about the particular story and the characters, but about life and what happens. I'll be sitting with these stories for a long time, and recommend his book to anyone looking for a powerful next read.

An easy review of Shuly Cawood's exquisite collection of stories, A Small Thing to Want, would be to repeat the deeply true words on the cover: "Smart, keenly observed, pitch-perfect stories." But that wouldn't say how they transported me into my own life's questions and struggles, the lighter place I'm in as a result, the urge to shout it from a mountaintop. And although I've left these stories and the women learning to voice their needs and wants, their voices finally their own and not merely echoes of those around them--they have not left me. Cawood is a master of the short story and the subtleties of human communication, highly recommended!

These are mostly stories about couples and relationships encountering difficulties. I especially liked the last three stories, which focus on Suzette and Mig, a couple in North Carolina going through a particularly rocky patch (and two stories preceding those are also connected by recurring characters). It's all done very well and is a quick read.

FRESH AND ENGAGING PERSPECTIVE

I was given an Advance Reader Copy of Shuly Cawood's book to provide an author blurb. Honored to do so, I had no trouble singing the praise of her work. In typical fashion I sought to compare her to some more well-known author to give readers a hint of expectation. In the end, I realized her style stood on its own merits with characters which she portrayed sincerely yet cleanly, without a lot of fuss and muss as she went about the business of telling the story, letting the issues drive the plot where relationships needed untangling. Unessential details were sacrificed for sake of the central message, a taut thread which stretched from story to story, satisfyingly tying the disjointed together. With language sometimes as stark as stiff, white sheets on a winter clothesline, Cawood grabbed me by the shoulders and made me look at what was happening. How rare a gift to find an author who has mastered the short story!

There is so much to love in Shuly Cawood's new collection, A Small Thing to Want. I would give this more than 5 stars if I could. The characters here may stumble over themselves and over the people they love, but they are deeply human, and we can see ourselves in them. The women in this collection may think they are striving for "small" things in the grand scheme of things, but within the realm of one's life, these desires -- for love, acceptance and wholeness -- are not small at all. Shuly Cawood is an exceptionally talented writer; these stories will sit with me for a long time, and I was sorry for the book to end. Highly recommend!

A wonderful short story collection that pulls you in from the very first story. Woven throughout these stories are love, loss, hope, and heartache. Cawood successfully manages to pull the reader into every story, leaving just enough unsaid that you're left wanting a little more when the story ends, yet you still feel satisfied. The thread that links many of these stories together is wonderful too, seeing a character show up later in the book and learning a bit more about what happened. Overall an excellent read, highly recommended.
