“Small Town Boy” is a set of four original and five borrowed songs. “Grandpa’s Advice” is a nice upbeat Latin rhythm, with sage advice on choosing a wife. “Slidin’ Delta Blues” is based on a recording by Mississippi John Hurt. (The Slidin’ Delta is a railroad train, the Kate Allen a riverboat.)
“A Shining Piece of Gold” is an original piece with a blues rhythm. “Boogie Woogie Country Girl” is based on the work of Big Joe Turner. “Small Town Boy” is an original blues piece. “Leavin’ Trunk” is my recasting of a Sleepy John Estes song.
“Map of Paradise” is an original slow blues piece. “Chicken Ain’t Nothin’ But a Bird” appeared in 1940 on the Cab Calloway 78rpm record “Are You Hep to the Jive?” “Holy Grail Blues” is an original blues rock piece. “Nobody But the Baby” is based on a Southern field holler. (I get the impression the adults are wanting to boogie, but somebody needs to look after the babe.)
Dean Rathje: vocals, electric guitar, acoustic tenor guitar, dobro, bass.
