Very few controls, but I got it for recording lectures. Sound quality is outstanding, picks up lecturers voice as if they are standing next to me.
To record, you simply switch the button "on" and then "off" to stop. There is no noise. There are no lights. Its magical.
Once the records are done, simply plug it into a USB port (USB included), open the drive on your desktop, then open the files.
You can then listen to playback, rewind, FF, then delete the file. I haven't tried importing files as my only objective was to re-listen to lectures to make sure I didn't miss anything. Perfect for this purpose.
- Very very small; product photos make it look bigger than it is
- Very simple operation: if the earphones are inserted it's a player; if not it's recorder. On-Off switch starts and stops recording; no voice-activated b.s.
- Recordings are .wav format using about a meg a minute, so capacity is large
The reason I purchased the product was to give it to my elderly father so he could use it for recording conversations with his doctors. It's simplicity of operation is important for this use, although I'll need to help him transfer the files to his PC.
Update... unit stamps the wrong date on the files it creates. According to the Uqique web site this is a known problem with no solution except to add the correct date to the file name when transferring to a PC. The good news... their web site is well done; and they operate out of Beaverton, OR
Well we put it to use in the field once so far and I have to say that I'm amazed at the level of quality in the recordings this device produces. I was looking for a potential way to record a bride's audio more directly than the current options we're utilizing and came across the Uqique, among a few other mini DVRs. Our first field use of this device was out by the shore, with pretty significant wind and lots of heavy waves crashing against the rocks. The background noise was pretty high, and the bride spoke fairly softly (though not as soft as others I've worked with) and this tiny, $26 little recorder did phenomenally. It captured her speaking very clearly and did pretty well at keeping the background noise fairly low. Honestly, it almost sounds as good as the audio we got from our $700 Sennheisers. We still have more tests to run with it, but for now, I feel confident in saying that the Uqique delivers far beyond it's price tag.
There are two issues I have with the device, however. The first, and most significant is that whatever codec they're using for the WAV files is not natively readable on an Apple computer. This is not a huge issue, however, as I am still able to open it in Adobe Audition and then save it in a file that can be used in Final Cut Pro. However not everyone who buys the Uqique is going to be using it for professional purposes, and likely won't have Adobe Audition, but in the Customer Questions & Answers section, the seller, NextPage Inc, said that downloading VLC will allow you to play the files on a Mac, and Emicsoft Video Converter will allow you to convert them to MP3s.
The second is pretty minor considering the cost of the device. It doesn't seem to handle peaks too well. After the ceremony, before we had a chance to remove the device, the bride was talking and laughing with some guests and at one point when they were particularly loud, it peaked pretty high and is more or less unable to be brought down without distortion. But for the purpose that we bought it for, this works greater than we could have imagined.
