Editorial Reviews

Great planet, Earth is. So great that other survivors of Planet Krypton wouldn’t mind making it home and taking control. But fellow Kryptonian Clark Kent has a warning for Zod and his followers who cross the line, especially if they seek to enlist Lois Lane in their schemes: I will destroy you all! Hearts grow fonder (Clark & Lois) and dangers grow stronger (Clark vs. warriors of Zod) in this 21-Episode Season 9 Collection. Plus, unexpected characters from DC Comics lore add exciting new layers to the adventures of the man who will become Superman. Among them: the shape-shifting Wonder Twins, magical Zantanna, and Justice Society of America’s Dr. Fate, Hawkman and Stargirl. May justice prevail – and Earth survive!

Soaring into its ninth season, this modern retelling of the Superman legend and its classic characters continues to blend realism, action and emotional depth to reveal a new interpretation of the enduring mythology. This season, as Metropolis's clock tower tolls our characters' darkest hour, we find Clark Kent (series star TOM WELLING) finally making his first attempts to embrace his calling as a superhero.

It's hard to believe that this show has gone on for 9 years, but the writing and the acting just keep getting better. Just like the last season, Clark Kent is one step closer to his destiny as Superman. The big overarching plot this season was the threat of the Kandorians, led by Major Zod. Smallville fans will recognize the name, if not the rank, of the big bad guy. That's because he's a clone of the evil traitor who tried to overthrow Krypton around the time Kal-El (Clark) was born. So he's going to be the worst villian in Kryptonian history, maybe. It's the reoccuring Smallville theme of destiny and fate. If you are destined to do something, do you do it or make your own destiny? Clark has been told since season 1 that he is destined to be this great hero and champion and symbol of hope. Most of the main plots of every season are about Clark finding out about his destiny and what he does to either embrace it or fight against it. So it is with the bad guys. Lex Luthor is destined to be Superman's arch-enemy. So even though we saw 5-6 seasons of Lex trying to overcome his dark nature and maintain some kind of friendship with Clark, we knew he was eventually going to be bad. Same with Davis Bloome, aka Doomsday. He was trying to fight his nature of being the ultimate destroyer. But ultimately, he, too, had to succomb to his destiny. In this season, it is Zod. This "Major Zod" has not made all the bad choices that "General Zod" did back on Krypton. But we know what he is to become. Will he make the same choices or will he change his fate?

The main highlights for me were the so-called "filler" episodes that focused more on Lois and Clark's budding relationship than on the threat of the Kandorians.

I had Season 8, which is probably my favorite season, because I love the Doomsday plot. I also had Season 10, because I missed it on TV and of course wanted to see how the series ended. After watching Season 10, I really wanted to go back and see Lois and Clark (and Chloe and Oliver) fall in love. Smallville Season 9 does not disappoint. While the Zod/Kandorian plotline can get a bit confused/heavy, I thought the writers did a great job, over the whole series really, showing how Clark comes to terms with his role on Earth. They also developed Lois well, showing why she is crucial to Clark's ability to remain focused on his goals, and how she lightens his load. I absolutely love Justin Hartley as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (to the point that I haven't watched the CW's new Arrow show, because I can't imagine anyone else in the role.) He is such a wonderful foil to Clark's seriousness and responsibility. Wonderful season.

We really loved the smallville series! It was great TV. Before "Gotham" there was Smallville... The story of how Clark Kent grew up and discovered his powers and his roll as a "human" and a "Super Hero". This was a great series for kids of all ages... but I would think ages 8 & older would enjoy it and not be too scared of the "scary scenes". Much friendlier then the "Gotham" storyline. If your kids like Super Heros... they will LOVE this series! We own the entire box set and my grown children still watch!

Impatient finally with the pro-Lana rabble's crude jibes, Lois starts to melt down the sets: That grey and pink number; the red date dress screaming, "I will need to be rescued within 15" of going out the door in this..." 'Stiletto'... (They also threw in two superheroes like mice in front of a wildcat for Lois to chew on... nice touch.) And fantastic adorable Chloe shines through at last as well...

Bought from Amazon. Even though the last few seasons left much to be desired, my curiosity and love for Tom Welling's acting soured me on to buy this season. He js the best actor that I have ever seen. He has more facial expressions than any other actor. Most of the time he doesn't need to say anything; his face says it all. I don't know what I expected from this season, but what I got was not what I wanted. There were too many fatuous conversations purporting to be profound and replete with bad grammar. The comic-book visual effects made me dizzy. The constant use of proper nouns as adjectival metaphors wears thin. That God-awful wailing - not singing - by Remy Zero is horrendous. Why would the female alien being frozen yell."My God"? If the Kryptonians were so advanced, why are their names monosyllabic, and why do they use primitive hieroglyphics instead of an alphabet? I cannot abide Callum Blue; even his name is annoying. How many times must that ice palace be destroyed? I cringe every time I see it.

Some far too complicated and confusing plots. Too much reliance on CGI. Story lines not as good as previous seasons. Removing Lex hurt the series. Still, entertaining though somewhat confused plots. Erica Durance really steps up here and looks and acts A1.

Arrived quickly. New as described. Have seen these before but had forgotten lots of episodes. So fun to see again. Hard to find and this was a great price. I watch Smallville with my teenage daughter and son. We all love the series. Superman is the best and Tom Welling is great.
