I’ve been using Philips for about three years now. It’s a solid product, but at nearly $35 per 100, the current price of $20ish for Smartbuy brand would mean a significant savings.
I was skeptical, so I just bought 100 of the Smartbuys to test them out, fully expecting some sort of major drawback for such a significant price break.
I judged them on three different parameters; writability, inkjet print results and readability.
Writability
Perfect. 100 out of 100. No distinguishable difference between the two brands. I usually get 3-5 failures out of Philips, but I’ve also had plenty of stacks that came out perfect. Again, I use a generic 7-to-1 dvd copier.
Inkjet Print Results
There was a bit of a difference here. The surface is a little shinier than the Philips. I print the Philips at a 40% ink saturation and I had to bump it up to 50% for the Smartbuys. For me, that’s a 25% increase in ink consumption. That was not an issue for me as the price reduction of the discs more than compensates for the amount of extra ink needed.
Readability
I sample 15 out of the 100 discs without any distinguishable difference between the two brands. Read times were comparable.
Overall
I prefer the more matte finish of the Philips and the Smartbuys have a tiny, almost invisible factory mark of “BI” on the face, but it is barely noticeable. Neither of these factors diminished the Smartbuys enough for me to keep using the Philips.
I’m changing over. If I experience anything out of the ordinary later, I will share that here as well.
