This is a simple guide that walks you through the entire process of eating right, from stocking your pantry to having the right tools, to the great recipes. These are recipes for real people that are appetizing and affordable even for our family of 6.
A great book for anyone wanting to eat better, but not spend all day in the kitchen.
I did enjoy reading this book as Alexandra Beck has a cute sense of humor. She also gives a list of essential pantry supplies and interesting cooking gear. You really don't need a lot of equipment to cook the meals in this book.
What Alexandra does first is take you through a bunch of cooking exercises so you can get a handle on basic cooking techniques. Then she teaches you how to prepare a variety of foods. She has a very “you can do it” attitude which is encouraging.
One thing she talks about is fish, but these days you have to worry about mercury so I eat very little fish. Also when she says “dried herbs” I wish she'd give recommendations on which herbs to use. Like I know dill goes well with fish but I'd still like to know what herbs she was using.
One tip she didn't give is to keep onions in the refrigerator. You will cry less.
So even if you only learned one thing from this book it would help you cook faster. She is a natural at cooking and will teach you to be one too.
~The Rebecca Review
While for some, it may be too basic, I understand that not everybody is familiar with healthy cooking techniques. If you are used to picking up fast or ready-made food, then you might think healthy recipes require a lot of time. This book will teach you that you can do it in a short time, fit health into your busy schedule and still enjoy your meals. I cook healthy, but I wish I had a book like this a long time ago when I had never before heard of quinoa, much less cook it.
So along with being a starter guide with ideas and tips for healthy cooking in a busy schedule, there are recipes, ideas for appetizers, herbs to spice up your side dishes and even dessert that you won't feel bad about eating. And when you learn the basics, your creativity will develop and cooking healthy will become second nature to you.
