Of all life’s financial shocks, few compare to bringing home an infant. Just one tiny person costs $250,000 to raise— not including college!
How will you pay for it? That agonizing question fuels mothers’ choices about their careers, budgets, and families. Some lean in, some scale back or seek new opportunities—there are no easy answers . . . but lots of rewarding possibilities.
Smart Mom, Rich Mom explores how women today are navigating the financially challenging career/parenting years. Written by a national money columnist and mom of two, the book chronicles people who have stayed in the game—full-time, freelance, self-employed, and more—and emerged more prosperous and empowered.
Smart Mom, Rich Mom mines their experiences to uncover both career advice and spending and savings strategies that everyone can use. Stories, checklists, action steps, planning tools, and more explain how to:
• Prepare financially for parenthood—whether you’re expecting your first child or your third
• Balance thrift with generating income and investing wisely
• Find flexibility at work while safeguarding your earning potential
• Save for both college and retirement despite increased expenses
• Plan for unexpected events, like a layoff or illness
• And much more

College savings (529 plans), retirement strategies (401Ks, IRAs), and growth investment funds, they're all addressed, and in a straightforward, easy-to-digest format. This is also the first book I've seen that takes into account the unique perspective of a mother, and the challenges for a mother to take control of her (and her family's) financial future. It's an empowering message, and in important one--a sound financial strategy doesn't help if a mother allows her husband or a male financial advisor to overrule it! Palmer's book rightly points out that a mother must have control over her financial future, and pass on this "Smart Mom, Rich Mom" empowerment mindset to her children.
As a new Dad, I thoroughly enjoyed "Smart Mom, Rich Mom" and will recommend it to the Moms (and Dads!) in my life! A fantastic read, and an important book, five stars!
I appreciate Palmer's writing and tips and there are so many gems in here from which to use and pull on a daily basis. I will be returning to this book and using as a guide to help our family. I am grateful to have this book that is so relevant on a topic that I always need more help with!
Kimberly Palmer’s new book, Smart Mom, Rich Mom, draws from her own expertise as a personal finance expert and as a working mom. She knows first hand the challenges and trade-offs that moms face in balancing family, work, and financial security.
Smart Mom, Rich Mom is a go-to resource that offers inspiring stories of everyday moms who have achieved success. It’s packed with helpful tips, checklists, templates, and action steps. Of note, Kimberly describes financial concepts and lovingly shares insights in a way that’s very accessible, readable, and jargon-free. Her step-by-step instructions for managing money, investing, and building wealth are practical and within reach.
