Editorial Reviews

"As a new mama, I know how overwhelming starting solids is! It's hard to know what the best information is, especially with so many conflicting opinions on feeding. This is a great, science-based, yet easy to follow guide for all parents, both new and seasoned! I love how it takes you through chapter by chapter each thing you need to know to nourish your baby, feed them the right foods, meet their key nutrient needs and understand what is most important. When you have a new baby, reading a book can be a lot of work, but this one makes it easy to digest all the important information. Highly recommend!!!"~
"This is a great resource for parents who want to do the best for their child. As a RDN I plan to recommend this book to clients as a guide they can refer to over and over. Jill uses research as her guide, which is what I would expect from a Dietitian, so you can trust her information to be the best available."~"I wish I could have read this book with my first child! This book gives a very good well-rounded overview of feeding infants. It's kind of like a "for dummies" book, but without all the quirky funny fluff. The point of this book is to give you an introduction to all the different aspects of feeding a baby, with an emphasis on nutrition. She explains the nutritional values of different foods as well as when and why they are important as part of a baby's diet. Sometimes just knowing why is a good motivator, and it has help me to be more intentional about food choices. This is an easy, short read, which is perfect because new moms just don't have time for big'ole books. She does a great job at giving just enough information to get her point across without leaving anything out. It is thorough without being boring, wordy or redundant."~"Excellent read! Filled with detailed, valuable information, organized, and user-friendly. As a mom of 3 and a pediatric speech language pathologist/feeding therapist, I highly recommend it!"

From the Author

Why It's Important to Start Solids

Starting solids, or complementary foods, is an enormously important stage in your baby's first year of life. It sets the stage for future flavor preferences, appetite regulation, nutritional status, healthy growth and development, feeding skills, and more.

Flavor preferences are started in the uterus, as amniotic fluid contains flavors based on your pregnancy diet. If you breastfeed your baby, your diet and the flavors it contains get passed to your baby through breastmilk. Starting solids is the next stage of flavor introduction, continuing the evolution of your baby's palate to accept and like a variety of foods.

Your baby learns a lot about his appetite and how to regulate it through the feeding experience. The approach and style you use for feeding your baby can influence how well your baby learns to regulate his eating, and his relationship with food.

The nutrients your baby receives in the first years helps him develop a healthy body and brain. We are learning that nutrients and nutrition are keys to future intelligence, immunity, and overall health.

Learning to eat solid food is an important skill that transcends language development, food preferences, and a healthy relationship with food. There's a lot going on when embarking on this important stage with your baby! Don't be too early or too late!
