I haven’t any kitchen scales...it makes cooking something of an adventure and the results can be a little...strange. Still, I’ve managed without for many years, but though I’d try these. Its made a massive difference to cakes ect which pleases the grandkids, no more volcano buns or biscuit type birthday cakes. Of course for weight control weighing food is a good idea and I was surprised at what some portions weighed....
They come in a well packaged box, easy to undo, no awful plastic shrink wrap type that nearly takes off fingers when undoing. It needs four aaa batteries which are supplied, so simply put them in and its ready to go.
Its has a smart appearance, and is easy to clean, no hidden corners or awkward to get to parts. The glass plate is easy to remove, and the whole thing so slim that its easy to store, but so smart and modern looking that it won’t be out of place left handy, ready to use on a the work surface.
The scales – the weights come in a variety of displays, including lb, oz, gr, ml, and cups. Special liquid feature measures water and milk in cups or millilitres, and its easy to change from one to another, simply press until the desired reading is shown. That makes recipes easy to follow, even US cup measurements, no switching on PC for Google conversions....
What I really like best is that you can add a bowl to the scale, and then set to zero, meaning when adding ingredients the to bowl only the additions get measured. Example: place mixing bowl on scale, zero, add sugar and the weight of the sugar only is displayed. I haven’t tried but imagine you could do the above, then zero again and add butter, and zero add flour etc, even zero and change measurements for liquid additions.Read more ›
A scale is pretty useless if it is not accurate so I tested it with a couple of 10 gram weights. No matter how many times I took the weights on and off the scale and no matter where on the glass platform I placed them I always got an accurate reading of 10 or 20 grams, depending on if one or both of the weights was on the scale. The readings appeared nearly instantly as weight was added.
I tested out the liquid measurements and found them to be quite accurate as well. You can place a bowl or cup on the scale and press tear and then start pouring in liquid. The scale has different settings for milk and other liquids and as you pour the liquid in the readout shows you how much liquid is in the container on the scale. Makes things a lot easier than having to measure with cups before pouring into the bowl. Since you can press tear at any time you can add multiple items to the same bowl or container and get accurate results.
The readout on the unit is a large LCD screen with a blue backlight that makes it very easy to read. The controls are simple with just two buttons, the M on the left of the display will move through the types of measurement and the T button turns the unit on and resets the weight to zero, also known as tearing.
The unit runs on 4 AAA batteries that are included. The scale automatically turns itself off after a few seconds of inactivity so as to not run the battery down.
I really like the way this unit looks and functions. The glass top can be unscrewed from the base to make it easier to clean or replace if it ever does get broken.Read more ›
The Smart Weigh is my third gram scale. The first lasted 10 years, and consistently delivered good results. The second lasted less than a year. When I had to replace it, I selected the Smart Weigh because it was highly rated and looked like a well-made product. But I've found it is flawed by bad design choices. I can only conclude that the designers had no idea about how people actually use gram scales.
First, the scale turns itself off after 1 minute and 10 seconds. This can be annoying when you're adding ingredients and come back to find it has shut itself off. But it gets worse.
When you restart it, it doesn't remember the weight it had reached just before it shut off. It comes back on tared to zero. This is annoying and a serious design flaw. My first digital scale shut itself off to save batteries after 2 minutes, but when you restarted it, it remembered its last weight. That way, if you were in the midst of adding flour, for example, it would remember that you'd got up to 385 grams before it shut down.
Third, if you add ingredients slowly, such as when adding salt to a loaf of bread, it doesn't register the weight added unless you add at least 1 gram at a time. So if you slowly drizzled salt into the bowl while assembling a loaf of bread, you could add 5 grams and it would still register zero! This ruined a pizza dough I prepped for guests the first time I used the scale.Read more ›
