I should disclose I'm allergic to cat pee, and have allergy induced asthma. Which is no big deal as long as I'm not huffing the cat box while they go, but if they're peeing in the same room sometimes I'll get a little choked up. Nothing I hadn't learned to live with.
I'm a single Mom of three so I'm not rich, and I would not normally purchase a marked up litter as a rescue, but I've changed my mind. There is no trace of ammonia smell even as the cats had gone! What! Where has this been my whole life?
That's obviously the biggest advantage to having this litter. Eradicate cat smell forever. All the cats were immediately drawn to this litter. The texture is pleasant. It isn't thick or clay like. It's easy to scoop. It has more of a clean sand like texture. It's not unpleasant and clumpy to handle, which is important of you're pouring it in several different boxes! Many litters have dust that makes everybody sneeze or wince, but this has very little dust.
If you want a house that smells like you have no cats peeing in it, try this litter. There is definitely a reason it's a favorite in rescue groups and multicat households everywhere!
I've been on a quest for a good, lightweight litter for years! We've always had cats, and for many years, I was willing to schlep the 42 pound bags of Costco litter because of the low cost. However, as my husband and I grew older, and after my diagnosis of MS, we both realized the weight of the used litter became unmanageable. In the past several years I've tried Arm and Hammer (too heavy and quite dusty), Tidycats (regular is heavy and the light is a disaster), World's Best (I've renamed it World's Worst), and Fresh and Light (not the Red Cap) that worked for us for years. 25% lighter was better than nothing, but the carbon greedy green jugs are not recyclable in our area, and the boxes were heavy.
I recently tried Pretty Litter, and I can see a use for it to monitor a cat's health. However, one bag for one cat for one month just does not work! Think of your cat peeing in the same litter over and over and over for 30 days. I made three weeks before the smell just became impossible.
I can't remember how I heard about Smart Cat, but I know I didn't find it at first on Amazon. I just checked and it doesn't appear until page 4 in the listings. I was willing to try anything, and as I said earlier, I am thrilled with the results. The 20lb. bag is HUGE, and I actually ran my hands through the litter after I put it in the box; the texture felt the same as Fresh and Light. Yes, it does track some, but I've found other litters that are much worse, and it's certainly something I am willing to live with for all the other added benefits.
I love how the urine forms such a hard ball that it lifts out cleanly, leaving no residue whatsoever. Once you remove the urine and feces, there is nothing left in the box other than the litter, and I do mean nothing. After four days of use and a cleaning of the box, I actually got down and smelled the box (Yeah, I know, that is gross; I did it so you don't have to), and I smelled...NOTHING! I was amazed!
I have two litter-robots, and I've feeling confident this litter will work great and won't leave "remnants" like Fresh and Light, remnants that mean a cleaning of the box every so often. That's my hope. :)
Update March 15: Day 10 of use. Still no smell from the litter! I've also found it works well for my cat that has occasional "pooping" issues. One of our older rescues has periodic loose stools, and this litter works great to clump the poop for easy removal. I just couldn't be happier.
Update March 24: Three weeks of use, and I'm still very impressed! Lifting out the urine and poo clumps is extremely easy, and literally every scrap is removed. Once again, I still get no smell from the litter once the waste is removed. The only downfall is it does track some, so if this is a biggy in your life, you won't want this litter. I keep a small stick vacuum nearby, and a quick pass whisks it away. I'm one happy camper! I'll be trying in the my Litter-robot's next.
The reviews were not stellar for the food based litters (wheat, corn, walnut) They either clumped poorly, tracked way too much...or worse yet, got bugs in the litter box. This is a problem with the corn and wheat litters, where mites may get into the product during manufacturing...then hatch and multiply once in your litter box. Google these stories...or look for them in Amazon reviews, it happens.
So I was determined to stay away from corn, wheat, and even the walnut based litters. I did try Feline Fresh clumping pine litter. And that was a good product, but expensive and not widely available. It clumped well, tracked only a little bit, and covered up all kitty bathroom smells. I couldn't tell when they pooped.
Luckily I found this SmartCat stuff. I was happy that it was all natural grass. I was skeptical at first of it claiming to clump better than clay. I thought "really....grass is gonna beat clay?". But it does! The clumps are very tight and do not break apart. And best of all, when my cats pee against the wall of their litter box or pee in the corner....Im able to scoop the clump out of the corner without issue.
Clay litters normally would break apart, refuse to come loose, and leave a pasty mess in the corner that I would have to scrap out with the scooper. This meant the clean litter would be getting dirty quicker, and the scooper was all nasty now. But with SmartCat I can scoop easily and keep everything rather clean.
The only downsides is that this litter doesn't mask smells as well as clay or pine litters. But thats to be expected since they arent adding much, if any, scents. And grass doesnt have a strong natural scent compared to pine. Also, this litter tracks a LOT. But thats because its so light and has small particle sizes.
All in all, this is a good purchase, even if it seems a little more pricey than what you are used to. 1 big 20 lb bag filled my two litter boxes well, where normally I might be using 35 lbs of clay.
