Product Description

The SmartScoop Self-Scooping LitterBox

Are you tired of scooping the litter box? Is the smell unbearable for you after a long day away from home? Are you frustrated with trying to mask the litter box smell before your guests arrive? While we love our feline friends, litter box duty is never fun.

SmartScoop has technologically advanced the traditional litter box. It does the dirty work for you. The SmartScoop Self-Scooping Litter Box allows you to break free from scooping daily. SmartScoop is an automatic litter box that scoops after your cat leaves the box. The cat waste is deposited into a bin where the Activated Carbon Filter eliminates the odor. It’s a win-win for both you and your cat.

SmartScoop
Spend more time with your cat and less time cleaning the litter box with SmartScoop
How It Works

Using your favorite clumping litter, SmartScoop will wait 15 minutes after your cat leaves, allowing enough time for the clumps to form. After 15 minutes, the rake will move forward, scooping the clumps forward and then up into the waste bin. Should a cat enter the litter box during the 15 minute countdown, the timer will reset.

The waste bin is lined with a No-Touch Waste Bag, making it hassle-free to dispose of the waste. When the bag is full, just remove the bag, tie it and toss it. The bag won’t smell since the waste has been trapped in the bin with the Activated Carbon Filter. Replace the No-Touch Waste Bag about once a week and the Activated Carbon Filter about once a month for the average use in a single cat household. If you have more than one cat, change the bag and filter more frequently.

Low Maintenance

SmartScoop is easy to clean. Simply remove the rake, waste bin and slide off the motor unit. The litter pan, rake and bin are all washable with warm, soapy water. Do NOT submerge the motor unit in water. You may take a damp cloth to the outside of the motor unit if needed. SmartScoop also suggests changing the litter about once a month. The litter pan is marked with minimum and maximum lines so you know how much litter to pour in the pan.

The SmartScoop Self-Scooping Litter Box scoops dirty, clumped litter so you don’t have to worry about wasting clean litter! As with all automatic litter boxes, it’s recommended to regularly clean the litter box. This is why it’s the “self-scooping” litter box and not the “self-cleaning” litter box. It performs the unpleasant task of scooping for you, but still needs a thorough cleaning like all litter boxes.

We have six cats, all shelter rescues that live indoors. Three large litterboxes (actually, clear plastic storage boxes from an office supply store) and one medium-size box absorb the output of the six. Each day it's about a 15-20 minute job to scoop the various boxes, so I was looking forward to the opportunity to try the SmartScoop Self-Scooping Litterbox to see if it saved any time or effort. I had previously avoided these because they seemed much too small.

The first impression was positive - the "available area" for the cats was the largest I had seen of the automated boxes, though that was maybe half the area of our larger boxes. It went together very nicely and the instructions are extremely clear, with helpful reminder stickers on some of the parts where you need to be careful during assembly. I liked the thoughtful touches such as the pull-apart power connector that was designed to handle being tripped over, the "no touch" bag holder and the ease at which you can pull off the collection box and rake for better access and more thorough cleaning.

This model comes with a fairly large semi-circular mat that is designed to pick up litter from the cats' paws. It also comes with a ramp that you can see in the picture. However, the instructions said nothing about the ramp and any way I placed it seemed wrong - the angle was far too steep to be useful. Our cats would have no trouble climbing the sides, though, so I just left it off.

The first thing I noticed was that, in operation, the rake tended to pull a lot of litter to one end of the box. Maybe I put too much litter in, but it was within the marked lines. See the first photo I uploaded here.

I've had a Littermaid for years, but their new ones kept breaking down. I was skeptical when buying this product but it's quieter than a Littermaid, gets stuck less often and stays consistently clean. We've got 3 cats, all large, and they're using this one box just fine. We need to clean out everyday, but that's just due to the number of cats. Overall great buy.

Only downside is you still need to scrape out the bottom occasionally, but compared to the other self-cleaning litterboxes on the market this is the best I've experienced.

I had a couple of LitterMaid boxes for several years. I found them lacking because of two main issues: very noisy. I had to turn it off every night before going to bed in order to not be woken up during the night. The second issue was the fact that the rake was so poorly designed, it basically cut the clumps up into tiny pieces. Seriously look at the rake, it is designed like little knives that slice through the litter hoping to pick up whatever it doesn't chop. This meant that tiny pieces of litter were left in the box, and the hallway constantly smelled like cat poop and pee. It was also quite nasty to take apart and clean. Simply not well-designed at all with little thought given to maintenance, function and ease. When the last one broke I decided to try something different since I was so dissatisfied. Read all the reviews on the SmartScoop and decided to give it a go.

Well, what a nice difference. First of all it is quieter, while the sound is still there, it doesn't have the high-pitched squealing roar of the LitterMaid. It is more like a deep-throated hum, but much quieter. Also it is more intelligently designed. The rake is made up of rounded wire, with a curved section at the end to scoop. This simple difference has pleased me to no end and it has meant that whole clumps of cat mess get picked up rather than sliced and diced. Everything that will need to be cleaned is very easy to take apart and wash (unlike the LitterMaid which required a screwdriver.) It also seems to be staying cleaner overall than the LM. After 3 weeks of use, I am still with the original litter I put in it, only having added about 4 cups twice. I figure at about the 2 month mark you do need to empty everything out and wash the main container and start fresh.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Updated Review - Have now been using this for about 7 months and not only has it continued to operate beautifully but unsure how we got along without it! Spouse has taken to using the little plastic grocery bags...I prefer the ones suggested by the manufacturer but either way, this thing works great.

I've never used a self-scooping litterbox before so I don't have an objective comparison but this thing is great! Cats have been part of our household for over 25 years...as any cat owner knows, they can be somewhat finicky creatures with very distinctive likes and dislikes. One cat, who has a medical issue that is controlled by medication, absolutely refuses to use a previously soiled litter box. We weren't expecting this to help but it did! To our surprise, the self scooping mechanism seems to dramatically reduce our constant vigilence (bordering on paranoia) related to a clean litter box.

Closely related is the need for clean litter when we travel. In the past, going out for a long weekend required us to prepare several litter boxes to assure one would remain acceptable until we returned. By adding odor control and keeping the box clean, we can finally relax without resorting to loading up the house with litter boxes.

Last but not least, this saves money by not having to replace litter daily. While we still wouldn't let it go more than a couple days, it's a wonderful relief.

Now for the negatives....I'm not the most handy person and this proved confusing to put together. My spouse said it wasn't (he is handy) but frankly, if I had to get this working on my own, I would have docked it a start just for the frustration level. Aside from that, it seems well made. It was slightly larger than expected which is a pro/con...
